I've been having a few problems with my sony Sr. When I was carrying it around in school in a nicely padded case, I had a couple "unexpected shutdowns". I have no idea what causes these, but does anyone have any ideas? Also, is there any way to prevent this? I'm not very rough on my laptop, although it might be bumped a little from outside the bag.

Also, on two occasions, the laptop started up from sleep inside the bag unintentionally. It heated up a lot inside the bag, although it's not what I would consider an overheat, because I had no slow-downs, crashes, or shutdowns. However, after the second time this happened, my fan has been going very fast and cycling between very fast and fast speeds, much faster than normal. This is happening even hours after I shut it down for 12 hours and let it cool off. Is there a solution for this problem, and could there have been some sort of damage?

One more quick thing: the little tube things connected on top of the power switch and power cord connector wiggle when pushed. Is this normal?

THank you all very much for your help; I really need a solution to the fan problem because I'm really worried.

The wiggle is normal. And yah sometimes it wakes, I've had same problem a few times. I just hibernate now, screw sleep. My laptops never loud though, even when its kind of hot. Well if you're losing 20% with battery leakage, I don't think thats normal, but the leakage seems to be occuring on everyones laptop.

It's really weird: my fan spins really fast and cycles between really fast and fast even when it's not hot. I dont' know what the problem is.

Check the network adapters to see if they're being set to be allowed to wake up from sleep. Is this an original factory install?

And, you can also try running CoreTemp very quick, let us know the temperatures.

Yes, it's an original factory install. I used coretemp and here are the results:

    TJ Max: 105 Fahrenheit

    Core #0: Min: 38 C Max: 41 C
    Core #1: Min: 38 C Max 41 C

THis is on 0-30% load. Also, I've been using the laptop for several hours now. It's sitting on a wooden desk, so I don't think that's causing any heat problems. Also, how do I check the network adapters like you said?

EDIT: it said max temp was 58 C... That sounds bad. I wonder what could be wrong...

I tried taking the battery out and let it sit overnight. After i turned it on the fan speed was normal, but about 1 minute after turning the computer on, it went back to spinning faster. THe fan may be louder, but something seems hotter in the laptop perhaps.

I guess that when it was on, it overheated to the point where the silver between processor and heatsink likely dried up, so now the processor isnt cooled very well by the heatsink. I had that on my dell, it overheated in a backpack, since warranty was done i opened it, and the silver was completely dry. I replaced it and it was fine. Again just a guess.

My laptop didn't exactly overheat: it just got really hot, but it didn't shut down or freeze or anything. Also, coretemp says I run when I'm carrrying my laptop around at about 33-35 C. I dont know why my high earlier was 57. After about 40 minutes of use, my temp is still 38-40C.

So for now the temperatures stand at 31-36C for very light use and travel, and 38-47C (rarely) for constant use on a desk. What does everyone else get with their sr?

    I get 44-45 idle, on a P8600 (25w processor).

How do you define 'very fast'? On my SR290, I haven't really been able to get it to spin any faster than its default speed, which is a little bit loud when I'm in a quiet room, but I've assumed it was normal.

Actually, you can go into Vaio Control Center, and set the cooling profile somewhere in there, to Silent mode, and it will spin the fan at a lower speed, but allow higher temperature thresholds. That will quiet it down if the noise annoys you. For network adapter, you can go to Device Manager, find the Ethernet and Wireless, go to properties for each one, and check under the Poewr Management tab.
