Yes its normal, sony ships all their notebooks without CDs. But sony made a hidden partition in your hard drive that it uses for system restore includind software, OS, and drivers. You can create a recovery discs (DVD/CDR)
!!!RECOMMEND!!! you do that before anything else. You can even recover an extra 6-7 GB of HDD space, by deletting that partition. Buo only after you've made the recovery discs.

Microsoft Office 2003's Key is on a pice of sticker in the package

why is it recommended that you do that before anything else? i've had mine for over a month now but i haven't created the disks (more because i don't really know what to do and i'm worried i might mess things up and i just never got to buy the CDs )

did i just make it harder for myself? i'm also hesitant to delete the partition, would i need it again if i've created the recovery disks? also, what if something goes wrong with my notebook, would they still be able to take the contents of the HD to burn the recovery tool then?

You still have time to create the recovery disc, you can recreate the partition multiple times. I say & sony say recommended first because you never know what will happen, and they can restore your system back to like the first day, when you had it . I have 2 sets, the one i made and the ones i bought from sony $.17

After you've made those CD/DVDs, you dont need that partition. Because what that partition will do for you, those CD/DVDs will do the same and gives you an extra 6-7 GB of HDD space. (all these are possible provided you keep the recovery discs in place where you can find it when you need it)
