Has anyone experimented with this yet?
I am considering replacing the existing 1.8 ultra ata hard drive with a SSD. Also considering an XP downgrade. any comments?

Yes i have done both of those things. I own a TX5 which is a 1.33 core solo model in the UK model which is the same as the TXN2 in the US. I have also downgraded/upgraded to XP as well.
A few people have upgraded to an SSD drive in this forum.
I upgraded to a Samsung SLC drive which i felt was a good combination in terms of power consumption and performance.
The SSD feels really very fast in XP. I have tried using the standard drive in XP and i notice a real difference.
The upgrade in itself is not hard.
My advice to you if you're going to do this is to make sure that you have all the right tools for the job as it can be hard to get these screws of. One small wrong move with the scews could cause a lot of damage.
Stay away from Sandisk drives as people seem to have run into problems with those. -
I was going to go with the MTRON MOBI 1.8" 32GB PATA ZIF SLC SSD.
Any compatibility issues I might find? I believe the PATA is the same as Ultra ATA, am I correct? could you give me the model you used? -
I don't know of anyone that has used the Mobi drive in a TXN but it should be ok. Most people that own the TX/TXN seem to go for a Samsung or other drives because they want lower power usage.

The drive i bought was a Samsung MCBQE32GEMPP-01A. -
Thanks so much for your reply, I believe I will get the Mitron as it seems to be more readily available than the others. Is the hard drive easily accessible? Sorry, I haven't attempted the procedure yet. How's London? Im here in Texas.

Hi gregbarron, London is ok.
The hard drive is pretty accessible. The actual upgrade once you know what you are doing and have the tools shouldn't really take more than 30 mins max.
This is a manual.

Btw, i also upgraded to an Intel N 5300 wifi card which was a worthwhile little upgrade i feel as well. A shorther FOC was used was used for my third antenna. It might be something to consider when you have your laptop open. -
alright last question, what specifically do i need to make sure as far as connection? i see ZIF term used, is this what is essential?
-
The drive in your laptop is a zif so it is best to go for a zif drive. There are no 1.8 SATA-->Zif convertors that you can buy as far as i am aware.
Let us know how you get on when you do your upgrade and what your feelings are of your new drive.
If i were you i would buy a Sony XP downgrade disc as well because i had massive problems with a standard XP install disc. The drivers you need you can get from the Sony website. Only one thing would not work for me the trackpad and i found a better solution online.
I don't have the Sprint WWAN installed in mine. I think you're going to have a problem getting the Sprint WWAN to work in XP as there are no drivers for that.
Good luck -
Well its done. I put in the Mitron 32GB PATA and downgraded to XP Professional OEM. Got everything to work, including the Sprint WWAN. Thank you for your valuable input. It is much faster, and the Xp isnt full of bloatware, and it didnt take hardly any space, making the 32gb acceptable. Thanks again.

btw, I believe I will use my toshiba hdd from my laptop to upgrade my ipod to 100gb.
