Ok, I have been searching forums for last 2 days. Im sure I've read many many discussions about Sony TZ.. I've see enough pictures, too !

Ok, Im just about to order Sony TZ from Conics, Gold color U7600 with 2GB, 32GB+160GB HDD (no ODD) option.

Now.... What was the reason for me to get 160GB HDD ?

Firstly, I read that it is NOT possible for us to take out ODD and place a HDD.
Secondly, since I hardly use ODD, I will just order with 160HDD as secondary HDD (with 32GB as OS boots, etc)

However, I have not seen any pictures of the laptop (side view) who have 32GB+160GB.
What does it look like? is there a dummy-slot ?

Now, I read that ODD were connected via USB bus. then is Sony simply shoving a 160GB HDD with USB connector to it ??

I also read on this forum that someone replaced their 160GB to 200GB. Then,,, was the connection SATA? then... how the heck did Sony placed ODD? or replacing ODD instead of HDD??

Has anyone opened up the Sony TZ to confirm the corrections...??

If possible, I'd like to get "1.8inch 32GB only" , and then, I can install '2.5inch bigger capacity' HDD later-on (but only if I can manually do so....!!!)

For example, if I order 32GB one only, then will Sony provide 'Dummy-case' for the ODD section? where I can manually instead ODD/HDD whenever I want to ?

    Thank you all ! :D

What I've read and heard is that if you dont opt for the odd drive then instead of a ide connection used for the odd they install an sata cable for the hdd. I just ordered mine from conics a build to order and I opted for the 160gb hd with nothing else. I can just use an external dvd drive to install things or when I need it and the ssd for 500 is just a bit too expensive for me. I figured that its more than fast enough for the 5400rpm. I would hate to loose a hdd option for the future, because you can always install a 7200rpm drive such as a hitachi travelstar 7k200 with 200gb, I already use one for my mbp 15" and its wonderful, doesnt get too hot either about the same or even cooler than a 5400rpm drive. Also I'll just wait until the 64gb ssd drives get cheaper until I decide to pop one in there, so for the machine already is a ultraportable and not that much of a horse power the non ssd should still be fine~ I dont mind waiting something like 40 more seconds or something or even a minute more to boot the laptop long as it runs fine to save that almost 600 dollars.

    Great that u've ordered :)

Ok, but is yours 160GB only (no SSD)?
Then they will have 1.8inch slot empty and 2.5inch occupied with 160GB right????

    Nanaki, thanks. I read that.
so Sony will add 'SATA' PCB with 160GB HDD versions, and USB-version if it was ODD.

But, What if I order 32GB SSD only ? then.. how do I supposed to add 2.5" HDD ? because they might put ODD-taken-out version...

Now... I still need a picture....

I don't believe that you can order just the SSD. I don't see that option on the Sony Japan site.

You have these storage options and these only.

    160gb 5400rpm hard drive only.
    160gb 5400rpm hard drive with 32gb SSD
    32gb SSD with optical drive
80 or 100gb 4200rpm hard drive (I think also 60gb?) with optical drive

So, it is not possible to switch out the optical drive with a 2.5" HDD and vice versa?

    Duffy!!!! Thank you.

Can you tell me about your Setup? I see no SSD ? sorry.

Ok, from the picture, I see no SDD (will SDD go into middle in that picture?) That is, rightside to the Wireless module and, Left-side to SATA.

I believe yours are 'NO ODD' model, then can you please get the picture from the SIDE ? (the side where there are ODD).

    Thanks x100 !!

    Hm,,, I cant upload image.. -_-;;
Sorry about that, I realized I can not upload images yet,
    anyway.

I see that SSD would go in the middle (if installed, and one ZIF is empty as shown in the picture)
and Left side is the Wireless module.
and ODD goes on the Right side, where Duffy's once has HDD, and if it was ODD, then the it would connect to USB Bus, right?

    Cheers.

I have the 160 GB model no SSD. I replaced the 160 GB drive with a 200 GB 7K200 HDD.

The SSD/1.8" HDD should fit in the space below the shiny metal cage...if you have a regular 1.8" SSD with ZIF connector. Samsung also makes a slim ZIF SSD that actually takes the place of the metal cage (this is what normally ships with the TZ). The ZIF connector is the drive connector for the SSD/1.8" HDD. I can't guarantee that you can just drop a drive into the empty space and go. No one has tried this yet and I don't have a drive to test.

Sorry I don't have any pics of the right side of the machine. Though I have had that part of the machine apart. Basically, since the machine does not have an optical drive. Sony just filled in the hole on the side of the machine with a filler panel. It is held on with a couple of screws. Sony did provide an additional USB port which is part of the USB expansion board. In theory you could remove the filler and physically install a drive, but I'm not sure how it would connect electrically to the machine. On my particular machine there is a SATA connector for the HDD. Most ODDs I've seen are not SATA.

And what about taking the HDD out, when you have SDD.

That should be possible i think. I am considering this for battery life and weight.

I will hardly use the 160GB on the road, i think. so i might aswell leave it out.

Then the question is: How easy is it to take out the 160GB HDD?

Hi jjashshik32 !, you installing 1.8 or 2.5 SSD >? Let me know how it goes!

BTW, After further reading, It looks like TZ can have 2 x SSD combination?

    1.8 32SSD (built-in) + takeout 160GB HDD and insert 2.5 SSD ??
