So I was wondering if I should get a high speed sd card (thinking of the sandisk ultra II 2gb) for my tz130 with the 4200rpm drive. Currently I am happy with the performance, but always looking to improve things.

Who here with a non-ssd tz is using readyboost and how do you like it ?.

I use the scandisk extreme 3. Unfortunately, it seems that the built-in card reader does not fast enough to support readyboost. When I use another external card reader, the same card could pass the test of readyboost.

This card is SD. I am not sure for MS!

Thanks clwang05, Looks like it's not worth it.

What is the best way to get readyboost into a tz then? Express card isn't fast enough?

I use a 4gb MS Duo Pro Ultra II by Sandisk. I tried using it via the expresscard adapter but it would not test fast enough. When I use it directly in the MS slot on my Sony SZ laptop it works. Given how cheap ram is, I think it is a worthy investment.

I have heard complaints about the TZ's SD/memory stick card reader and expresscard slot being slow, not well designed or what?

I bought a “normal” MS pro duo. Readyboost works. hdtune shows the speed is about 5MB/sec. However, the speed of scandisk extreme3 SD is only 2.4MB/sec.

I put an 8GB Express Card SSD in my TZ11XN and readyboost works fine although I didn't really notice any difference in performance as I already have 2GB physical RAM.

Looking forward to the results...I wish I could test this out myself on my non SSD TZ, but I only have a regular (non high speed) Sony pro duo stick, and so it doesn't have the required characteristics for ReadyBoost to work.

You will definately see an advantage from Readyboost if you use a fast media even with 2GB of RAM. However, superfech + readyboost doesn't increase performance in every aspect like RAM does.

If you already have 2GB RAM installed, Readyboost can still improve boot time and software load time. It does take a prolong use of this feature to notice the gain. I have 8GB express card installed and readyboost enable (TZ150 2GB, 4200rpm), my Vista boot time to desktop is 48sec. Most office 2007 program load within 2~3 sec, except Word (4~5sec).

i'm using an ordinary Sony mem stick duo pro (with adaptor) for readyboost using the built in reader and it works. I've tried a 2 and 4 gig stick and both work. I've opted to keep the 2 gig for the readyboost and the 4 gig stick in the PSP :D

Forgot to update this post, but I've stopped using readyboost, there is a anonying bug in vista that after you resume from sleep it has to re-create a new readyboost file on the memory stick, so until SP1 is out I won't be using it as it actually will slow down your system after waking up from sleep.

A little update. I recently got a transcend class 6 SDHC 4 gig card. I tried it on my TZ for readyboost. It failed for readyboost using the built in SD card reader. I borrowed my express card SD Card adaptor from my Sony SZ and the transcend still failed to qualify for readyboost.

However, the built in SD card will read, copy format and erase the SDHC card as a normal memory card but not for readyboost use

let's keep this discussion going... it seems that with a 4200 rpm drive, there would definitely be a benefit to using readyboost...

Does anyone know a LOT about flash memory? If so, what is the ABSOLUTE fastest flash that can be added to the TZ? would it be express card flash? or memory stick pro flash?
Or is everyone saying that the card speeds are irrelevant on the TZ because the readers themselves are too slow?

    Please advise.
    thx.

so in summary, the mspro duo reader slot works on the tz for readyboost but not the sd card..?

usb seems it would be fastest, but why spend this much on the tz then have a huge usb stick hanging out the side...

any ideas on what the absolute fastest ms pro duo card is?
    thanks in advance

you can only use up to 4gb for readyboost, but quite honestly, I would think with the psp ,there would be way more high speed mspro duo cards out there. The SD card will NOT work.. I just tested it with the fastest 4gig sd card on the market... just too slow. I think I'm going to try both the express card and an ms pro duo and see which has faster read/write speeds.

^ there are some on the forums using that card... you must format it clean, then go to properties and click "optimize for performance" instead of the default " optimize for quick removal "

I have sandisk extreme III version of that card, but everything I have read says the card reader will never approach speeds above the ultra II, so I'd go out and get the 4gb ultra II sandisk ms pro duo card... it is very cheap at B&M stores right now.

I stuck in a 1GB san disk III duo pro into my tz150 w/1gb ram. No difference, if anything its taking like 1:30sec to load into windows longer. so now its about 6-7mins b4 everything is up and running.

from what i know the memory card readers on the vaios are slower than the memorystick readers.

so if you want the fastest thing for your vaio laptop you have two choices:
-get the fastest memorystick (sandisk extreme III pro duo, 18MB/sec read-write).
-get the fastest USB flash memory (corsair voyager GT can hit 25 write, 35 MB/sec write)

problem with the USB is that you will have it sticking out of your laptop all the time, while the memorystick would be just sitting in there.

im thinking of buying the sandisk extreme III pro duo, 4gb...to readyboost my AR. has anyone tried readyboosting this? please indicate any performance enhancements...thx

^ i am readyboosting with sandisk extreme III 2gb card... i couldn't find the 4gb ANYWHERE... not really noticing much. I really am doing it for battery life more than performance though... which is a much more measurable gain than performance...

Hello everyone, I've been reading this forum very attentively as, rather stupidly, I gave way to temptation and bought a Sony ultraportable - the TZ21MN - six weeks ago on special offer.
It has only 1 GB of RAM and this is driving me mad but, owing to a complicated warranty arrangement, I have no way of upgrading the RAM so I'm pinning my hopes on Readyboost.

    So far I have tried
    (1) a 4GB Sony Midi Microvault - works in USB drive. On maximum cache allocation of about 3700 MB, this gives a 5% improvement in Graphics memory, but no other effect shows up on the Windows Experience Index.
    (2) a 2 GB Sandisk regular SD card and a 4GB Sandisk extreme iii SD card in the TZ's dedicated SD slot. Both rejected, "not suitable".
    (3) NOt much, but I'm settling for this - a 4 GB Sandisk Pro Duo memory stick (in the dedicated MS slot, so at least it's out of the way) which gives me a small improvement in the Businesss Graphics score on the WEI. This has gone up from 2.7 to 2.8, big deal!

If anybody with a 1GB RAM TZ has managed to do better than this, I'd love to read about it! Regards to you all, I'm enjoying the forum - Meg.

You know, upgrading the RAM on your TZ does not void its warranty. As long as you keep the original RAM that came with the TZ, and stick the original one back in whenever you take your TZ to a Sony repair store or something, you will be fine. They have no idea of telling whether or not you touched the RAM.

Thanks so much Gazelle but in this case they have, unfortunately, as they (Comet, need you ask....) have stuck a special label over the RAM access door which says "WARRANTY VOID IF BROKEN".

Being - like - you incredulous, I investigated this. Comet told me they did not repair or upgrade Sony PCs as they were not qualified (!!!) to do so while the Sony helpline person, appealed to subsequently, said that although Sony could, indeed, upgrade the RAM chip for me they could not prevent this procedure - even if performed by themselves, the manufacturers - from invalidating Comet's stated warranty.

I agree, it is unaccountable. What a way to run a whelk stall. I'd be delighted to discover that I've misunderstood the situation but fear that is not going to happen and meantime, I'm still hoping for help from Readyboost! Cheers, Meg.

So just to recap: If you have a tz with 2gb ram and an ssd, readyboost is not worth the trouble?

All I care about is bootup time an application loadup times, but if readyboost doesn't help if you already have 2gb ram and a ssd it doesn't seem worth it.

Also, can you still use the memory stick for additional storage?

I think you must be able to use the extra space. When I accidentally put a wrong memory stick into my TZ's slot , it objected to the fact that there was too little available space to run Readyboost ( there was less than 256 MB) but it didn't object to the many JPEG images which I had on the stick.

Meg, I highly doubt Sony put that sticker on there. I bought a refurbished TZ180 from sonystyle, and there are no stickers preventing me from disassembling anything on the laptop. I'm guessing the seller you bought it from did that so that if somebody tried returning it, he could tell if they had tampered with the inner workings of the laptop.

I've sold notebooks on ebay, and I put Warrranty Void if Tampered stickers on the bottom of the laptop over a screw so that if the buyer tells me that it doesn't work, and returns it, I know if it was or was not tampered with.

Thanks Scotty bu no, I didn't think Sony had put that sticker on.
In fact I know that Comet the retailers had, as their salesman pointed it out to me - with considerable emphasis - when I was buying my laptop.
I'd asked whether the RAM was upgradeable and he replied "Not during the warranty period" (which is 12 months, here in the UK) "or you'll invalidate our guarantee".
I'm not certain where you're located, but in Britain we have a Sale of Goods Act which assigns all guarantee responsibilities to final sellers not to manufacturers.
Sony can give me helpful telephone advice (indeed, over many years of buying Sony products, I have found that they invariably do) but, unless I have bought an item directly from them they will not take any repair esponsibility if it goes wrong.
The actual retail sellers - in this case, Comet - are the only people legally bound to do free repairs under warranty. So, you see, I have to abide by Comet's sticky label, maddening though it is!
I wonder whether anybody else on this message board has run into the same problem? Thanks, anyway, for your help and your sympathy!
    Meg

I now have a Sandisk Pro Duo 4GB memory stick, exactly like the one illustrated by Elninom in message 22 on page 3.

It is in my TZ 21MN in the dedicated slot and I can report that yes, it DOES work for Readyboost when programmed as recommended but its only effect appears to be a tiny improvement in the Business Graphics Vista Experience Score, which has gone up from 2.7 to 2.8.

I also tried a 4GB Sandisk Mini Cruzer, wrapper festooned with signs saying "ENHANCED FOR READYBOOST" and "WORKS WITH WINDOWS VISTA". I'd hoped that this, being a USB device, might work better with Readyboost than my Memory Stick Pro, but its WEI score was identical and its performance lamentably similar.

My TZ has only one GB of RAM and that, of course, is the true limitation. I'm sure Readyboost works much better with two GB machines.
