Sony TZ and SSD Express card

The performance of my TZ160C is not so great. It came with 1GB RAM, and I am upgrading it to 2GB. It has 100GB hard drive. It is a 1.8" one. My query is about adding a 16GB SSD Express card, where I will install Vista. Will that boost my TZ performance? Is there a better solution?

 

Good question. I have no experience with it, but my guess would be: no. because of the limited bandwith within the TZ.

Yes a clean install of Windows XP will seriously boost your performance. You don't even need 2GB in XP.

I am sorry for my ignorance. Could you please elaborate on the "TZ's limited bandwith". What do you mean by that? How come it has limited bandwith?

allow installations and bootings.
You will definitely benefit using express SSD as compared to your 1.8inch 4200rpm hdd. I can confirm this as I read several websites and forums. But sorry i do not have any further info or links.

 

I don't know what thread but I think it's the TZ owners thread.

People found out that devices conncted to the TZ like a USB harddrive do not get full speed. Futher on, any device connected eats bandwith from the others. So if you are using a bluetooth mouse it eats bandwith from a usb drive.

Details are in another thread, and I am not 100% sure if this is applicable to the expresscard.

It's not strange because Sony TZ is so small, it has a very tiny motherboard that comes with some limitations.

Sure I can understand a Flash expresscard can boost performance, but the TZ is a different ballgame.

 

Phil, yes I am well aware of the fact that ExpressCards are routed via USB hub, etc. But I read that all expresscard made for laptop are USB-routed...

I think.... the performance *will* boost if a user came from using 1.8 4200rpm HDD.... but if a user uses anything 2.5inch, which is likely to be 5400 or 7200, then I don't think expresscard SSD will benefit....

Sorry, I really have no idea about the links or source. This is because for a last couple of weeks, I was really mad surfing everywhere for SSD info, SSD vs HDD, etc, etc. hehe;;
So far, MySSD brand have expresscard SSD (up to 16GB) SLC model that can do 10MB/s write (as compared to Lexar or others that only do 3MB/s write)

Ok, Ive found some info, they are in Korean (so probably useless... but apprently ppl do 'mod' and strive to install expresscard SSD to improve speed)

I think we can use this in the TZ once it is available. It uses directly the PCI-E lane and is much faster than the current version of the ExpressCard SSDs which only use the USB link.

Considering that it's built for professional camcorders, it's probably going to cost 2 arms and 2 legs.

Hope that helps but I'm surprised that the Express Card uses USB band width. Blue Tooth and internal DVD almost certainly do. Internal 2.5" HDD uses either PATA or SATA (depending on who you tak to??) so has no effect on the USB band width. The FireWire port also seems to be independent.

I'm still waiting for my machine so I can't confirm this personally.
