So I went overseas last week for 6 days (to Saudi Arabia) and took my company laptop, thus leaving my TZ170 at home. Before I left my extended battery was fully charged, so I shut down my computer and left the battery in the laptop. When I came back I find the battery completely dead. At the same time, my standard life battery which was NOT in the laptop still has a charge from a month ago. Why is the TZ draining the battery even when turned off (i.e. complete shutdown)?

    This is strange.
Maybe it went on sleep or hibernate mode when you were closing the lid and you thought that was shut down?

No not at all, I was especially careful to make sure it did a FULL shutdown before I left and before I touched anything or closed the lid. This should not happen...

Full discharge within a week indicates either a battery problem or the computer woke up somehow. If it was the latter, you should see some entries in the event log for the period while you were away.

I notice that my G11's battery doesn't hold its charge as well as I expect with about 20% power drain when in the computer and not used for a week. However, that's a long way short of your 100%.

PS: I just found this thread with a similar problem.

i'm seeing the same thing on my CTO TZ that i've had for about 6 weeks. there was a period of a week where i didn't use the laptop and when i went to turn it back on, battery was fully discharged. just to be sure, i charged up the battery, shut down the laptop and left it for another week. same thing.

anyone else with a TZ seeing the same problem? i'm using the standard battery

Same issue here as well. TZ170N/B. Anyone find a solution or what is causing this shutdown battery drain?

Here's a longer thread on the subject which seems to be a feature of the Sony notebooks.

It's almost necessary to provide Sony notebooks with a hardware power switch which physically disconnects the battery.
