I just bought a TZ150, left my unreal cd in there all day. And tonight I open the drive to take out the disc. Its scratched in circles almost the whole way around. Now I didnt turn the computer around, I just used it normally, and most of the time the drive was shut off entirely. Is this an issue? Or should I just not move it at all during any drive access? I know you shouldnt really, but my old fujitsu literally took swings in the air with nary a scratch on any cd or the computer. Same with my macbook pro, though this computer and the mac make some disconcerting noises if you turn it too far during disk access. I'm not really freaking out over the disc, but I just want to make sure it was my own doing and not the computers fault or an issue I should watch with this particular model. I guess I'll leave a blank one in there to see where this goes, or make sure I dont leave any discs in there as I go about my day. Thanks for you help.
*not trying to imply theres a fault with all tz's just wondering if its an issue I should take it to sony to look at.

scratches happen. laptop or pc drives.
from hanging around the forums you're the first to report heavy scratches so it's not an issue with the tz. -
Okay so its every time I turn it slightly to the right. I hear a slight metallic sound and I pulled out my dvd and bam. Circular scratches. Is this an issue that can be resolved by taking my computer in to the store for repairs? Or is it just a thing I shouldnt do while the optical drive is spinning. Not one scratch in any other direction. To the right though. Can anyone throw in a blank cd and turn their laptop while accessing it and tell me if they get it also?

Sorry to bump up this thread. I was just searching this on Google and got this thread, I am also having this problem with my TZ130, so your not alone. Actually, I thought I was alone in this issue. Doesn't look like anyone else is having this problem though. My scratches are circular and on the outer edge of the discs.
Not good at all. This makes me wish I had the 2.5" HDD instead of DVD even more. I barely use the DVD drive and when I do, it scratches my discs.
I'd better find a blank disc and turn the notebook to the right to see what happens. When I had put my discs and took em out to see the scratches, I had never heard any sounds. The drive is a bit loud though. -
Bad DVD drive.
Scratching discs isn't normal. -
Yeah I dont use my drive as often as I thought I would, but when I do, I cant/dont move the laptop even slightly, it always stops burning and corrupts any disk or leaves circular scratches. If I could live without my laptop I'd drop it off to be fixed. Maybe over spring break.

Hi all,
I have a brand-new VGN-TZ270N and discs get scratched in the DVD/CD drive. This is evidently a widespread problem. Sony had better do something about this. I spent over $2,500 for this computer, and I'll be damned if they'll get away with not fixing it.
I'm sure there are many others out there experiencing this problem. It's just a matter of time before they find this thread.
I had a problem a few years ago with an expensive Sony television I had for two years. The design was flawed and they denied it. I collected a list of names of people from all over the U.S. and Canada who was experiencing the same problem. I threatened Sony with the list and they had a replacement at my door within one week.
I'm sure that the squeaky wheel will get the grease this time too.

Hi All,
I hadn't yet used my drive to burn CDs/DVDs but did for the first time this week and did NOT experience this problem. I burned a bunch of CD's and none of them are scratched.
I was going to suggest maybe Sony had fixed this since the original poster and Rahulnirmal have older versions of the TZ than mine but I guess this isn't the case according to Zan.
Good luck finding a solution!

Once summer rolls around I'm going to send in my laptop. It's my primary computer at school and I cant do without. Anyone else try a warranty claim for this?
-
I would say reinstall your DVD software.
That was a joke.
Sorry for being of no use.
Good day. -

I've been running DVD's on my new Vaio TZ150 for hours, and I don't see any scratches at all. I keep my TZ on a flat surface, always. Maybe you tried putting your TZ in your lap, and the unusual angle messed up your CD's? Even then, I think that would be an unusual scenario.

I udnerstand scratching from violent shaking but I have yet to own a laptop (I've gone through 8 in the past 3 years, the TZ being the one I love the most and have had it for about 7 months now.) that scratches discs while moving around in a normal situation. This is done during reading or writing. In fact, the XBOX 360 does this and just as in my case, everyone considers it to be a fault not a problem with the user for moving a device. In my case at least the device is expected to be moved.
I just mailed out the TZ a few days ago. They acknowledged that it SHOULDNT do this, it is a fault covered by warranty and tomorrow, I get it back. I'll update with how it was fixed. I also got a new keyboard and battery since the clips broke. With all these issues I know it sounds like I abuse my laptop but I baby the TZ and keep it in a case. thank god for the standard warranty, I'll be tacking on that extended warranty asap. -
Sorry to hear about your problems. Do keep us up to date on how your laptop repair goes. Good luck.
