Until a couple of hours ago I was pretty sure that I was opting for the TZ90 with 32GB SDD and 160GB HDD.

That was untill pdudas raised the point that he believes it will use a lot more power. He said it would bring down standard battery's life from 6-7 to 3-4 hours. Is this true?

Would it be possible to power down the HDD whenever I don't use it?
Maybe with some kind of power management app? I believe Notebook Hardware control offers some features.

I don't beleive the battery life would go down by that much, no way.

well, add the power consumption of the two drives and you have the total memory(not ram) related power drain.

it will do better with just the SSD but not that much better.

I am certain that it will not reduce battery by half. because SSD only has an approximate 10% less battery usage than conventional hard drive. going ahead and order that config. of course its going to reduce the overall battery life but definitely not by half, but you are powering two hard drives now instead of one.

You can allways have the harddrives to powerdown when not using em.. Atleast it works in Xp, never tried it in Vista, but I bet it will work there to.

For XP, do properties for the desktop, screensaver, power. There make sure that portable/laptop is chosen, this is to get all the powermanagement thingies, and you can choose the time for it to powerdown etc.
