My boss is looking to change his VAIO-TZ laptop to the VAIO-TT model. The one issue he is concerned with is the performance. His current VAIO is very slow when he has outlook and a couple of more apps open (nothing heavy though). It is 1.2GHz as is the TT model. Will he have the same issues with the new TT model? Is the a different model that will give greater performance but be similar in size?

Going from 1.2 to 1.4 isn't going to be that much of a difference. Hard drive speed and memory will make a bigger difference.

RAM will go from 2GB to 4GB and HD speed from 4200 to 5400.
Will this give good overall performance?

Yeah that should give it a bit of a boost.

The TT series also use newer cpu's, the U9xxx series have a higher FSB (800 vs 533 Mhz) and more cache (3MB vs 2MB). The TT series use DDR3 memory at 800 Mhz in stead of DDR2 at 533 Mhz. The harddrive is also faster and cheaper to replace with a very fast SSD drive because it uses 2.5" SATA formfactor while the TZ uses 1.8" ZIF/PATA.

So performance of the TT should be better, if you upgrade with a SSD disk it should be more then fast enough for you boss.

Downsides? Yep, ofcourse there are. The TT is heavier and (slightly) bigger, also it doesnt look as good. The design of the TZ looks more stylish while the TT is more toy-like. Also the entry level models over here are the sand color, not realy business-like. I prefer black versions.

Tks for the relpies. He is going to the US next week and is going to buy one there rather than here (ireland). Big difference in cost!

You guys seem to forget to mention the graphics performance. While the TZ series carries the old and outdated Intel 950 chipset found in some many netbooks nowadays, the new TT series uses the Intel 4500 chipset which easily outperforms the 950 chipset, incl. some HD video decoding and other stuff.

I have both, the Vaio TZ and Vaio TT and the Vaio TT with 1.2 GHz CPU and 120GB HDD is more than adequate for almost everything, with the exception of 3D shooter playing and/or high performance rendering.

Hi there, I have a new TT and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the video chip set to make it 3D Shooter compatible? Current version has the usual Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express. Any thoughts appreciated.

COTN you cannot upgrade your graphics card.
All that you can do is to upgrade your software.

Thanks for the rapid response rachuk. I assume that even if I did change the software, it will not bring it in to compatibility with most games however (e.g. Medal of Honour etc), as they set the minimum requirements based on the card not the software.

    Cheers
