You need the Sony OEM version of Windows, or it can't figure out which model you have.
That said, the VAIO Update service is worthless except for slowing down the system. Instead of making it a scheduled task that runs once a day, the nincompoops at Sony made it a service that stays in the background and checks for updates once a day (unless you've hibernated, in which case all bets are off).
Oh, and let's not forget that it was "designed" by people who think that everyone use small fonts in Windows. On a Z with a 1600x900 screen, only those who don't know how to change the font size will punish themselves so. If using standard Windows large fonts, graphics will obscure the OK button.
And, as you've found out the hard way, it won't let you TELL it what kind of model you have.
Again, it's crud, designed by imbeciles. i wouldn't trust it to tell me about updates.
