    Hello fellow VAIO owners,

Does anyone know if the VAIO range of laptops have some software which auto-dims the screen when on battery? I have the laptop on maximum performance and full brightness, but it keeps dimming the brightness everytime i close the power options window.

I just did a clean re-install and it still does it, this laptop is about a week old. The laptop in question is a VAIO VPCEL1E1E/B.

    It's a Windows 7 setting.

Go to Power Options, press Change plan settings, then Advanced, Display. Configure the values there for both On Power and On Battery.

Some models (like S and Z) have brightness sensor which also control the brightness of the screen depending on the illumination of the room/environment.
Usually this feature stops working or doesn't work properly if you don't perform a clean installation the way you are supposed to (install the needed Sony software that operates the sensor).

But I don't think your model has that, check though, not sure.

Already checked it, it's set to dim after 5 minutes on battery, this happens instantly.

    @Gracy123

I'm not sure, i will check, thanks.

Yeah, there's nothing like that on mine and there is no mention of one in the instruction manual. I was just wondering if any of sony's bundled software contained some screen dimming software which overrides windows 7 power options. I may have to look at sending it back, because this constant dimming and (un?)dimming of the screen is making it quite uncomfortable to look at the screen.

It's probably just the default brightness for "On Battery" mode.

Does your brightness go down as soon as you unplug your laptop from AC, and back up when you plug it in? And are you able to adjust it manually after it changes? If so, that's most likely it.

There should be a brightness bar at the bottom of the Windows 7 power options. Just adjust the on battery version.

Send it back. Sounds like a defect.

EDIT: On second thought, you might first check the Vaio Control Panel. My Z has a Display section which includes auto brightness control (which I uncheck). Yours may have some kind of setting which is causing the weird behavior.

It sounds to me like a faulty "fresh OS installation"... basically if you don't know what you are doing, stick to the image it came with. Try reinstalling it.

The first post says he reinstalled the OS to get rid of the issue, but it's still there...

Well, OP, you have an AMD laptop with the E-350 APU? Do you have the latest AMD mobility drivers installed? The GPU drivers do contain the parts of the logic for controlling the backlight levels, maybe there is something akin to Intel's Dynamic Backlight power saving in the AMD drivers...?

Apology. I misread. Thought it started after clean-installing.

2 BAD "clean" reinstalls don't tell anything. Did you restore to a factory image? If not, you probably missed a step. Clean installs on VAIO's are a lot of work to get done properly.
