It kind of looks like there is some CF on it and designed a bit like the Z. What is the base gpu, cause I doubt its either the Nvidia gpus? How does the GT210 and GT230 compare to the ATI 4570 in the SR? How much does the current CS weight?

From what I know there is no Intel video option for the CW. All the specs I've seen on it always have the NVIDIA card. Also it's a 16:9 screen, and not the 16:10 usual notebook screen ratio.

Seems just like an update to the current CS. Nice design, kinda reminds me of the SZ. Nothing special IMO.

Personally, I would either drop 2,3 K on a flagship Vaio like the Z, TT, P, or X (only if it doesn't have atom, or it's got ion... :(), or just go for a regular Thinkpad. No point on wasting $$ on a "regular" Vaio (I know I'm going to get flamed by people for saying this).

It is quite interesting to see how Sony tries to satisfy the luxury gadget market while constantly pushing out "budget" machines... I think this is why people either love Vaio or hate it. All the carefully designed, high build quality Vaio's have a premium to them, while the budget models straggle to separate themselves from the competitions.

You hit the nail right on the head Jparity, it is with their higher end models that they distinguish themselves. Their lower-end models are nothing special and often are beat easily by the competition. For instance, I can find several better alternatives to their Vaio W, but very few notebooks stand up to their amazing Vaio Z.

I will admit this is fairly nice for the price, but it tooo thick. The device look a bit like the Z, that gained weight and slowed down a bit.

Looking at this CW and that weird extended battery on X, is Sony trying to sell to people desiring unique and different laptop by going "thick" instead of "thin" like everyone else? I can't believe this thing is thicker than CS...

    NVIDIA's GT230 is expected to launch in Q4 November/December

Does this mean that CW will come later this year?

I dunno why I said that. I guess I was thinking of the 3.06ghz the Z offers, despite the fact you wont notice a speed difference.

How doe s the GT230 compare to the ATI card in the SR? Is this or the lower GT 210 a re-brand of another nvidia model?

Notebookcheck lists the GT230 way above ATI 4570, even above the Nvidia 9700.

But Notebookcheck isn't the most accurate source in the world.

It's still portable but not an ultra portable like Z.

It also has three times the graphics power of the Z.

People have been complaining about the lack of gaming notebooks from Sony. It seems like Sony is listening.

Real gamers prefer 1366*768 over 1920*1080 in a notebook with these kinds of GPUs.

What about the GT210? So is this the most powerful gpu Sony offer on a notebook right now? Are there any other notebooks in the 14in market with that gpu?

Well for games, you can descrease resolution and picture will not look that bad. I cant imagine playing games on 14", that reminds of 10 years ago when we played quake on 15" CRT, when I saw it a few years ago, I could not imagine, how we managed to play on it :)

Yes, but i am not talking about resolution, i am talking about screen size. 14" is 35cm in diagonale...that is like...tiny , unless you play at short distance.

Well maybe this size is not for you.

It seems to be quite popular though. Even 13" is very popular for gaming.

Heck even 11.6" with Nvidia 9400 is selling big time.

imho, partially do to the thickness, the Vaio CW is currently the ugliest laptop ever designed by Sony. Looks aside, this actually packs a huge punch spec wise.

Those big 15" boxes were not really nice to look at :)

Anyhow, judge a product by its photos is a big naive, you have to see it in person.

i wonder if its bulkier than my C series.
    its pretty machine tho.

    like someone comment in engadget:
"One has to admit, Sony makes some pretty good looking laptop. It is like:

Sony Laptops = Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, Scarlet Johanson
HP Laptops = A pretty cheerleader from your high school squad.
Dell Laptops = Your best friend's sister.
    ....
Lenovo Laptops = The travesty from Shrek. "

    and

"Apple Laptops: That obnoxious hot chick who's always with somebody with lots of cash. Wears lots of make-up, and makes a big deal out of appearance and status."

    really made my day, LOL

Just checked out the www.sonystyle.com and here it is:

    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644659494&N=4294954315#reviews

I have been waiting for windows 7 to get a new laptop and I am glad i waited becuase this 14" CW looks dam good. I really hope Sony posts a video up of it so we can see how it looks next to the other models. Wish they didn't use the Piano Black Finish on the black model....i vote for a matte black lol.

EDIT: Here is a picture of it open and on:

Since the specs is very good for the price, I kind of want to get this as a desktop replacement.

I think Sony need to bring out a premium version of the CW, with some carbon fiber bits on(to lower the weight), thinner by .22in, and if the screen is gloss, give it a screen like the Z or TT has.

Given the option, I'd rather have this than my Z soley bc of the Geforce 230M. I think the slight weight gain/size increase would be well worth the graphics upgrade. I've used my Z for a lot more gaming than I previously had anticipated! Use it more than my Core i7 + ATi 4890 rig bc i've been away from home a lot lately :\

They should give it an option for quad-core processors considering other 18" multimedia notebooks have them as an option, such as from HP and Acer.

im loving the black with red finish, sexyyyyyyyyyyyyy, :) :D :D
but to each person his own taste, i was aiming for SR but always wanted a better screen and one thats not 16:10, and the GPU, ahhh im in heaven, i was always hesitant for the SR but this seems really good, please please please let it not be full gloss, thats gonna ruin the whole thing :( Sony is known for that matte professional and classy look, please dont ruin your streak just to compete with others with a bit of "eye candy shiny gloss look" ahh well lets see some videos and upcoming pics of this...
P.S. i was hoping it would have the power switch like the SR/Z oh well, new design layout lets see how it turns out.....doesnt it seem they STUCK the extra palmrest bit on? thtas what it looks like to me
EDIT: oh wait i forgot about the C/CS series :D they're glossy, but i mean its like a mix of the Z or SR with some other series

I have seen tons of posts and users saying 16:10 is way superior than 16:9, and i was shocked to see someone that said that the 16:10 is the reason for not going with a model.

oh you dont have to :), i dont really see an advantage of 16:10 over 16:9 or maybe im not fully informed of the pro's and con's. with 16:9 you get a better resolution then the average 1280x800, i was planning to get FW but coming from an SZ i want to stick to the 13-14" factor and i dont trust any other company as much as i trust Sony so i was waiting for something like this to come from Sony. unless someone can help me out and tell me the advantage of having 16:10 over 16:9
Edit: now im looking over again and agian, its seems really thick :( almost 1lbs heavier then the SR,
and the biggest let down...atheros wifi card, i know that the dell laptops that have nvidia GPU have problems with intell wifi cards, is it the same with all laptops? the Z series has the 9300 nvidia GPU and yet it has the 5100 intell wifi card......

It is a matter of personal preference in reality.
But the 16:10 offers a slightly larger real state.

hopefully yes, but im not sure, as on the sony specs page they've written for example up to 2.8Ghz and up to 500GB so i guess this might mean that it will be customizable, or they have all these pre configured, so who knows :) we'll just have to wait and find out.hope they release around the Win7 launch instead of a later date

yeah, specs look really good so far, but im still worried about the wifi card. But this being the laptop i might buy and it being my 1st laptop that i actually buy, since my current and previous laptops have been 2nd hand given to me, i guess im just one of those people who everything to be perfect :D :D, but i cant wait 2+ months to buy a laptop waiting for user comments and reviews to show up. and everyone knows that refreshes are the best part since you get spec bumps :D and say for ex. the FW you got an option for better screen and 1080FullHD at that :p how cool would it be that in future this gets a 1600x900 screen :D :Dahhh damn me im never happy with anything :D STOP DREAMING!!
Edit: sorry for the alter-ego moment :D, it happens.......

Wouldn't a 1600x900 full HD screen be overkill on a 14 inch screen?

I was pondering getting a bigger screen, say 15.5 or 16 inches - Vaio FW or HP HDX 16 - but even then I was questioning the point of full HD resolution on a screen that size. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think the premium price paid for full HD on a screen this size is worth it?

More important to me is the HDMI port to connect the laptop to a bigger HD TV.

Still no news on the Vaio CW on Sony's UK page.

well the Z series has a 13.1" 16:9 screen with an option for a 1600x900 resolution. there are several laptops that have in the 13-14" category that have a 1600x900, but i mean its per user choice, so i would suggest it to be a default choice but an option. I like to have more real estate but want portabilty instead of carrying a 15-17" powerhouse.

I agree, i havent found the CW in the Sony UK page, probably going to the Sony Centre wont help if i ask them anything about the CW. but 100% i want to see it in stores and handle it before i buy it. Ill have it sent from USA anyways, since im used to the US keyboard :) and never really grew fond of UK keyboards much.
Why is it that Sony UK sometimes gets laptops abit late? :(
EDIT: i was wrong here you go
    http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vn-cw-series
the UK site has more detailed specs than the US site like the US site doesnt say much about the GPU if its the 1st time hearing it, on the UK site it says its a 512MB VRAM GDDR3 :D

Thanks for the link - looks good to me.

£750 for the model noted on the UK web site - what I couldn't find was any info on models with a higher processor as advertised....up to 2.8GHz.

Neither could I work out whether the models at £750 included the blu-ray drive or not. I think so but.........

Well, we will have to see if they release CW for customizing and thats what they meant with up to 2.8Ghz and up to Blu ray burner and up to 500GB. or these are the base models and when its released they will add the rest of the CTO models...all we have to do is wait and see. I called my local Sony Centre and they've said that the CW isnt in their system yet nor do they have any info about it, so when it comes out they said they usually get it in right away or it takes max 1-2 weeks to get them in
