What's the best FW series I can get that have 512MB Video Memory and that BluRay RW.. I currently have the AW160JQ but I want to downsize. I'll mainly be using it for video editing in After Effects and Premiere Pro CS4.

Uh...you can customize your FW on sony.com...so couldn't you just make one that suits your needs?

If you're looking for preconfigued options someone else'll have to help you. Or you could wait a bit, I think there's another thread on here that says the FW series is getting an upgraded gpu soon? But its not on the us sonystyle site yet

Thought I'd tell you this since I'm considering a Sony FW too, hope it helps a bit?

    Just talked to a rep from Sony;

The upgrade FW490 with Radeon HD 4650 will be available tomorrow, June26, including the build-to-order option.

I've been toying with getting a 12-14' notebook for portability; but the FW series, with the refresh, is getting more intriguing.

Does anyone know of the issue of the loose barrel hinge on the left side? Whether that's been fixed, or if anyone has it repaired under warranty?

Tomorrow? Maybe it's time to finally get one. :)

And you should ask on the FW Owners thread, I just posted here since I'm not an FW owner.....yet :D

Edit: They're actually up today online for pre-order....I read the owners thread and its already up.

Any word of the 1600x900 Hi-color display? The Full HD X-brite display (1920x1080) makes the text way too small to read (although it can be adjusted, the quality won't be the same).

Yeach, I want that too. The do have it with FW1xx series. Let's hope that Sony will bring it back with the CTO models.

I posted elsewhere on this site that I actually had side by side an FW190 with HiColor and a FW390 with FullHD. I zoomed the higher resolution machine to 125% which yielded approximately the same size text. Only when other operations were conducted at the same time did the zoomed image tear or deteriorate appreciably. And the crispness of the text seemed about the same as well.

Typing into a zoomed mail client like this Forum does yield some occasionally weird spacings, however, but nothing so dramatic as to seriously impede productivity. And, to my surprise, one can actually begin to adjust to the smaller type of the native resolution, if one's eyes are adequately corrected with glasses/contacts.

I'd suggest bringing your HiColor screen into a retail store that has the Full HD and trying this out to see if it is truly as disappointing to you as you fear. I say this only because I truly doubt that Sony will bring back the HiColor in what it markets as an entertainment notebook. It has the DuraView for its premium smaller screens. Likely, Sony is concentrating its efforts on an eventual expansion of LED or RGB LED, again most likely in the higher resolutions for the two entertainment lines, FW and AW.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestion but the zoom feature doesn't work with all applications. And I use XP, in which the zoom feature doesn't work at all.

I thought Derrida meant Ctrl-scrolling... which as far as I know only works in web browsers.

I'm using the large font setting (120DPI) on my 1600x1050 screen, and problems only appear in some dialog boxes (not a big problem). I saw a full HD Vaio FW today, and the screen is beautiful... Nevermind the small font, everything else looks so nice :D

No, the only way that you can buy Configure to Order model is from SonyStyle.com or SonyStyle Stores.
