Has anyone ever tried to replace the display monitor on one of these? I've got one that works perfectly, but the display is torn (apparently, it's not good to try to pick up the laptop by the screen).

It appears that buying the replacement part new is extremely expensive, but I'm thinking about trying to find another used laptop with a working display to see if I can replace it.

What I'm wondering, though, is how hard is it to take apart and put back together?

ScreenTek Inc's website offers screens for sale and instructions on how to take apart laptops to install the screens. I think Sony's are a bit tougher since they have a lot of screws to take out. But the general procedure is the same. If you can find the part number/screen model for your Sony, you can usually find the screen for maybe $100-$200 on eBay.
