    Hello,

I have had my S1 apart more times than I can count, and I would say that with the VERY notable exception of the touch pad and power button ribbon cables, the laptop is pretty sturdy. However, the two cables I've mentioned are really not (I've been through two of each). If you want/need to work on one of these machines, try to unplug and plug these cables as few times as possible.

On a separate note, I am attempting to upgrade the DVD drive, I have a 9mm drive which fits like a glove, but it is not recognized by the BIOS. The replacement is a UJ-862, I think the original was UJ-812? Surely the BIOS is able to recognize other drives? Does anyone have any experience trying this? ANy info would be much appreciated.

    James

This guide appear to be very helpful. However, I am replacing the memory cards in my Vaio Sony FS640. After memory was upgraded to 1 GB, the computer will not come on.

The cards appear to be inserted correctly, since they fit in, yet obviously, I have done something wrong?

So, my Vaio S-270 is nearing the end of its life, and I'm pondering its replacement. That said, if I can put in a new HDD, clean-install XP, and give it to a sibling or the parents, that could be a nice gesture.

But am I correct to understand that the maximum HDD I can put in would be 120 GB, and that there's not really much I can do about the (extremely noisy and rattling) fan short of removing the entire heatsink apparatus and replacing it? I'm running the latest BIOS version? If so, I don't know if it's worth the risk of bricking it, even if it's not in active use anymore.
