I'm not the least bit computer savvy, so if any of you could help me out, I would appreciate it so, so much.

I have a 2 year old Sony VAIO VGN S260 that has recently stopped working. First, the screen began to randomly black out when I tried to start it up, basically it just stops whatever it's doing and it's covered with white & black vertical stripes and then it just goes completely black. And now I can't even start up the laptop most of the time, I've pressed the power button for over 5 minutes and it still will not start up. But oddly, sometimes I'll press it once & it'll start up just like normal. By any chance does anyone know what kind of damage I've done to it? Or whether I should try to get it repaired, or is it not worth it, and I should just buy a new notebook altogether?

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you! :)
