While at the CeBIT show in Germany yesterday I laid eyes for the first time on the Sony VAIO X505. My jaw dropped, this thing really is thin....

Hey Baxter, is that thing coming to the US? And does it have a built in optical drive? I'm guessing not but you never know, Sony can be sneaky. [ :p]

I don't think we'll see it in the U.S. anytime soon, if ever, it's available through expansys.com if you want to pay top $$$. You're lucky to find an air bubble in this thing let alone and optical drive, so the answer is no on that [ :)]

Toshiba has something like it over at Best Buy and Circuit City. Although relatively sexy (not as sexy as the Sony, though), I noticed that it did not come with an optical drive. My first question is, "what's the point, then?" It's thin (really really really thin) and light, but if you gotta lug around an optical drive, then you're kinda shooting yourself in the foot.

Don't forget lugging a PCMCIA WiFi card too, it doesn't have that either.

I must say, when I first saw the X series in my local SonyStyle store, it's quite an amazing sight. Though there's no way I can afford one. :D
