    Hey folks,

I would greatly appreciate a solution to my problem ... I have recently purchased a SONY Vaio, and it turns out that the fan is unfortunately quite loud ... I have already uninstalled a majority of the programs on the PC, but that computer keeps working and working ... Do you have any ideas how limitize the noise? :)

    Thanks very much!

    Best,
    X

How about telling us what model VAIO you bought... there are quite a few and they all have different properties you know....

Apart from that - define "loud" - spinning fast? Changing speeds? Strange noise?

Don't mean to be rude, but your description is like saying "I have pains, what do I do?" :) Don't know what doctor would be able to help based on that information.

Oh and welcome to the forum :)

Thanks Gracy, I will try to be more specific :)

    Sony Vaio: P6100, 2.00 GHZ, 4.00 GB RAM, Win7 64-bit
Is there any way to find out what specific kind of Vaio I have?

What is interesting to me is that if I perform the Windows Perfomance test, my laptop only achieves a 3.2 out of a 7.9; however, most other factors get at around 5.5, but the graphic desktop (not games!) performance for Windows Aero does very bad, only achieving a 3.2/7.9 - Maybe this could be the source of the problem?

The sound of the fan is ... well, hard to describe, but it's not a constant spinning, rather changing speeds with some irregular noises - It definitely does not seem broken though.

    Thanks for your help! :)

Your seriously don't know the model

Anyway - it is written in the bottom right corner of your screen frame - something starting for example with VGN... or VPC ...

Interesting... a Pentium Vaio w/ Win 7 x64... In any case, Gracy is right, the model number is at the bottom right of your lcd panel

    What is a NW?

Just to add to the discussion, since the SONY now rumbles again ... "Fan noise" is indeed very hard to describe, but again, right now it's a loud spinning, which irregularly becomes loud, and then tunes down again.. I am meanwhile not working on anything, no movies are up, no Photoshop or whatever could impact the processor....

^Sorry I was trying to guess your model since you weren't helping us out there ;)

Check task manager and make sure the checkbox for "show all process" is checked. Look for any processes using higher than 10% load.

Even though you don't THINK you are doing anything to tax the CPU, you certainly could be.

Well ... it is.... it's like "I drive an Audi" - so what Audi is it considering the "small" difference between A2 and S8 - "Oh, where do I check that, I don't know" :D :D :D Sounds like a blond woman, doesn't it :D

Vaio is just what all sony laptops are called. It means... well ... nothing apart from the fact that it is a Sony... and Sony has XX generations of XX different model laptops :)

Back to your problem - Desktop Performance for Windows Aero has definitely nothing to do with the FAN :) And it is normal for it to have the lowest score. Mine has the lowest too - 4.9.

How old is the laptop and was it always like that? Was it like that from day 1? There are models such as the F (Yours is EB by the way, write it down ;) ) where such a dynamic FAN behavior is typical... which doesn't mean it is nice... but you either need to live with it ... or get a different laptop.

What I would recommend though is:

    1. Read throughout the http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...538-official-vaio-e-series-owners-thread.html - maybe you will find comments about this and ask there - those are the guys that have your model.

    2. Check for a BIOS update and generally for driver updates on Sony's support website

If the sound is "unnatural" for a FAN - in other words it sounds broken - you need to contact Sony.

If it is spinning with high speed you might want to check what the CPU load is and whether there is a software that loads the CPU, forcing the FAN to work actively to cool the system down

If it just changes speeds too often - this could be something typical for the model.... like the F .... not much you can do about it then :(

It states that the CPU operation is set at 15% (though the number is constantly changing); 89 processes are running; the only one that has a different number than '00', is the 'process idle speed' (? This is a guess into the blue, I am sorry, the computer is set for German, and I had to translate that word...), which is set at '98' (!)

BTW, thanks for your generous help, this is some fantastic support! :)

    Thanks Gracy!

Yes, it has been like that from day 1 (the laptop is merely 6 weeks old by now), which made me wonder; but I also had the fear that I would not be able to change a lot about it :( It is just very annoying if you are constantly working on it, and are exposed to this very annoying sound!

I will check the other forum and ask if they have experienced similar problems - Thanks for the link!

Idle at 98 is fine...it should be in the mid-upper 90's if you aren't doing anything. It doesn't sound like any processes are out of whack. Try this - go to control panel then to vaio control center. Under "power management" and then "power options" do you have any settings showing for "Thermal Control Settings"?

That's "System Idle Process" or in other words unused CPU power. 98% is absolutely normal - so now we know your CPU is not loaded, so that's not the problem.

That's worth a try but from my experience - it doesn't deliver any noticeable effect.

^Varies model by model, worth a shot to switch to balanced if it's available. Some of the larger models run the fans at higher speeds even at idle if it's set to high performance.
