Well, here is my friend doing circle on making the S Series a final purchase but due to the fact that we've notice that even after spend about a minimal of $1700 on the s460 laptop people are still making additional up grades (memory or hd... ) and saw himself probably falling in the same situations. I've notice that no one has been talking about the s430 " silver case" model. I've compared them on the sony site and this is what I notice, the 430 comes with 60gb then 80gb then the s460, s430 has a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, 128MB Dynamically Shared Video Memory compared to the s460 nVIDIA® GeForce Go 6200 with TurboCache and acording to the site it states that the s430 comes a 512MBx1 compared the 256mbx2 on the s460. One more thing was the DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo Drive6 on the s430 then the double layer on the s460. So aren't all the features up gradedable and actually cheaper if bought from other source instead of sony. He wants this s series because one of it size and weight, so please help this man so he can leave me alone and i can get back to workbefore some notices. Thanks guys

First of all, you have to be carefull about some of the specs published at sonystyle.com. When I got my s460, the spec said it had 1x512mb of RAM, when it actually came with 2x256mb. I'm guessing the s430 will be the same, despite what the spec says.
So far as video performance goes, the nVidea GeForce Go 6200 is far superior to the Intel graphics. The nVidea has 32mb of dedicated memory (this is enough for most all applications except recent 3D games), and uses 96mb of shared memory. Intel graphics have no dedicated memory, all is shared with the CPU. It's not even close.
And don't even think of upgrading a dvd/cd-rw to a double layer dvd +-rw unless you really know what you are doing and don't mind removing 15+ screws to even begin. It's something only a technical person should even try.
So far as price goes for the s460, you should be able to get one for about $1550 in stores after a $250 rebate. And it's been sold for even less at times.
Hope that helps! -
$250 rebate, woo, wheres this at. He had added up to about an almost $1800 after taxes (ca. with there dumb recycle fee ) We see now the difference, to bad for my friend, he really like the silver casing on the s430. Thanks

I only checked Circuit City, but you can check Best Buy or Comp USA to see what deals they have too.
There was a deal for the s460 that I posted here for $1450 at Comp USA, but that was a one day thing and you had to buy it around midnight. I got mine for even less (which I found too late to post here), when Circuit City had a 10% off coupon, plus the $250 in rebates. But that didn't last long either.
The silver is up to you. But in general, I think it costs about $100 more, unless you find a deal I haven't seen.
Best of luck in your shopping! -
good looking out, we'll do that, once again thanks, now this guy can leave me alone

There is actually a S470 which is the same as the S460 but it's SILVER. It's an exclusive at SonyStyle. =) Just to let you know...I had a hard decision on purchasing my S460...I had so many other options...Fujitsu , Toshiba , Alienware..etc.
But when I boiled down everything this is the Notebook that I never regretted for a minute purchasing. I went through 3 different ones to know that this one is the ONE I really wanted.
Word of advice :
Yes money is a big issue in making a big purchase like this one for most people. However you gotta ask yourself...if you dont' buy it then you'll end up always thinking about it and regretting you got an alternative. I figure if you are going to have something that's going to last you a few years might as well shell out the cash.
You are only trading hours for dollars and time can always make up the lost money. =)
Now if only I would have bought the S4XP....=) j/k -
thanks for the advice, but we can't seem to find that silver s470. You wouldn't know the exact link would you?

hmmm..well the one I saw was here in Las Vegas at the Sony Style store. I'm sure you can click the S470 link and something should turn up. =)
