    I would think it would have to have 2 ram slots because if you currently have 3Gb ram, it must be 2 sticks: 2gb + 1gb.

    - you could run the program cpu-z and it will tell you what ram you have installed and what type.
    - or open the laptops ram access door and see whats in there. usually its a door on the bottom of the laptop about the size of a credit card with 1 or 2 screws.

    I have doubts though that it's the ram causing your system to crash. Ram going bad is not a common occurrence. you could test your ram by downloading a memtest disc image, burning it to cd and booting it.

    what kind of crashes are you experiencing? browser crashes or full windows blue screens?

    Agree with S.Prime. Most common cause of laptop crashes is overheating. Check temperatures with a utility e.g. Open Hardware Monitor. Has a nice graph too.
