My Sony is about 3 years old and recently it will not boot unless the battery is removed and fitted again.
Then it boots okay and all is well apart from another problem which happens about twice a week the dreaded blue screen appears and gives a "hardware malfunction call your vendor NMI :parity check /memory parity error system has halted" any clues what this means as no additional hardware had been added recently. A reboot is then ok and everything works fine but I am a little worried that here may be damage somewhere. thanks

Why don't you check your RAM?
It all sounds like a hardware issue to me and I'd start with RAM diagnostics!!
