Thanks for reading this post. I have searched forums but can not seem to find info. Purchased laptop 05/05 at office depot. Purchased extended 3 year warranty. Earlier in year laptop would not come on when pressing the power on button. The W Lan light and on light would come on when pressing the on button but the VAIO screen would not come on. I press the on/off button again to make the lights go out and tnen press on again. After about 25 times I can finally get it to come on. The cyber test repair center in FL replaced the harddrive and now that it is out of warranty the problem is back. The battery is charged, I have electrical current. Rarely when I turn it on I get a faded rectangle sprinkle of color on the bottom portion of the screen. Thanks for any help. Has anyone else had this? Thanks from a NEWBIE.

Your symptoms matches my girlfriend's vaio CR when she had it in a very hot moist location, i had to open it up and use a hair dryer on it for about 30 min (slowly going over the motherboard) once I realised there was a thin layer of condensation over the main board. Did you ever expose yours to any form of moisture or liquid?

Thanks Java for the reply. I am not aware of it coming into contact with moisture ever. I am concerned it is a motherboard problem.

It sounds like a motherboard problem. I would restart the computer once with battery power (not plugged in) to confirm it's not the AC connection (doesn't sound like, since you get LED lights). Then, try to boot and go into BIOS directly or boot from CD to make sure it's not a harddrive problem. After that, you have to open up to check the fans are running and stuff like that, maybe do a little cleaning inside.

If all failed, well, there are some good deals going on for the new Z and SR series!
