I managed to install windows 7 on my old VAIO VGN-170P laptops. Everything is OK instead of special buttons (including the volume control & brightness) & DVD eject key.

I tested different solutions, installing shared library, utility series, event services in sequence, but without success.

    Please help.

Tell me if you have unrecognised devices in device manager?

Yes. The mass storage controller, network card & an unknown device.

I have the drivers for the first 2 ones, but I have not installed them yet.

mass storage controller is something like card-reader?
    network is simple.
OK. So we have an unknown device then... I am almost sure that you can't use special buttons because of it. I Had a 3-rd Worldwar with my VAIO F12 for more than a week of the same problem.
Install again shared library. Then reboot in safe mode. try to install notebook control Driver. reboot normally. THEN open device manager. right button on unknown device and select to install new drivers. it will give you a choice to do automatically or to find them manually on the computer, select find manually. then tell it to search drivers in drive C (C:/) and wait. I think it will find drivers which were installed but not used by windows. If it won't work - other devices (unknown) or install all other drivers you didn't install and try to search again.
INSTALL NOTEBOOK UTILITIES ONLY WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY UNKNOWN DEVICES!
Then reboot in safe mode, delete folders and files from C:/TEMP and install notebook utilities
Write if it helps or not

P.S. And for God what event services did you install if I don't see it on official drivers download page???

I did not find any driver for the unknown device. Its hardware ID is as below:

    ACPI\SNY6001
    *SNY6001

& its location is on Intel 82801DBM LPC interface controller-24CC

Regarding the Event Services, I am using the SOAVES file version 3.0.00.13110. I got it from http://support.vaio.sony.eu/ under model number VGN-A117S under the models previous to 2006. This model is similar to VGN-A170.

I searched & found that it may be programmable I/O controller. But, where can I find the driver? I have already installed the Intel chipset drivers, but the original XP one.

European version? I know that uS drivers made only for USA, Canada but Europen only for europe...
Well try this ftp://download.sony.com/CA/pc/SODSPI-13932100-US.EXE I found the same problem. Or this *SNY6001 If you can
REMEMBER that after you installed driver and it didn't work try to search it on drive C again

Thank you very much. I will try this.

Do you have any download link for the US version of shared library, Utility DLLs, SUS & VCC files?

I installed the programmable I/O controller driver, and now there is no unknown device.

I installed shared library, SUS & event services, but the eject , special buttons & FN keys do not work.
