    Can anybody help

I have the above machine which just suddenly stopped working

When i switch on i get 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps

I looked at everything and could find problem so i thought it was the Motherboard

I got a replacement board which was from a working Laptop and reloaded all the bits but i still get the same

I have tried removing the 2 2gb memory sticks and reseeting and putting every combination still no joy

I have tried without HDD No Joy

I have reseeting the Heat sink and fan with new thermal paste no joy

Does any body know what the Beeps mean

Also if i took out the fan and heatsink could it fire up so that i can rule out the Fan etc

I am ripping what hair i have left out

Is it that it must have 2 HDD in and that the HDD have gone

    Any help would be appreciated

You mentioned that your computer had beeps during bootup. This is actually a code that tells you where the problem lies.

According to this website: Computer POST and beep codes

For AWARD BIOS: "1 long, 2 short: Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information"

However, I'm not quite sure if your computer uses an AWARD BIOS. Can you or anyone else confirm this?

On some vaio's the 1 long followed by 2 short beeps at bootup is a RAM memory problem, you say you bought a replacement motherboard which I assume was known to be working so is worth trying.

Make sure your using an earthing strap, unplug from the charger and remove the batteryand carefully remove the 2 RAM chips, it could be one is faulty and the laptop will boot with just 2GB of RAM although it maybe a bit slow. Re-set one of the chips and see what happens then if that works then power off the machine and remove the battery, remove the tested RAM and replace with the second RAM and reboot.

If you get 1 long 2 short beeps then power off again and remove the ram and replace with other chip and try again, if you get the laptop to boot with one chip but not the other then you have found the faulty chip

If both chips sets boot on their own but wont boot together then it could be the RAM chip socket is damaged and you can eithr have it repaired or just run your laptop with only 1 2GB RAM chip
