    Hi,

I am new to these forums so please excuse the newbie question.

I am thinking of purchasing the Sony VGN-T1XP (may be a different model number in the US) and assuming someone out there may have already purchased one, I have a couple of questions:

    1) What is the performance of this thing? Does it need the extra 512mb of ram?
    2) How hot does it get. Sony's have a bit of a reputation?
    3) How is the battery life as Sony estimate around 5hrs?
    4) I have a bluetooth and USB mouse and wondered if there was any way I can disable the touchpad when using an alternative pointing device (the touchpad always gets in the way when typing up large docs)
    5) Is there anything else I should know before purchasing this?

    Regards

    Si

    I have a T1XP

I have had it for over 3 weeks now and its going great

    Now answers to ya questions

    1) Performance is generally good if u just surf the internet, do some word documents etc etc , i dont think it needs the extra 512Mb at all , well not at the moment.

    2) It get lukewarm to warm when under pressure , but nothing alarming at all , its a lot cooler when using the battery and under power management.

    3) Well i have gotten around about 6-7 hours out of it this week. The battery life is the laptops strong point i guess.

    4) Yup

    5) Any thing else u wanna ask ?

    There

    Enjoy

    PS i love my T1XP

    Hi Lustral,

Thanks for you help. I assume yours is a UK model? Can you confirm what it came with? From my understanding there are no disks supplied, all the backup is stored on a retrieval partition on the drive. I know that when I purchase mine, I will want to completed reformat the hard disk, partition it 50/50 split and reinstall all the apps I really need.

Now I have a windows disk so this is ok but I assume I will need to copy certain things onto a cd (drivers and non-windows Sony apps) to ensure I can reinstall them after I have rebuilt the laptop.

Is this possible? Is it just a matter of copying certain files to DVD, etc? As you have only had your vaio for 3weeks, I doubt you have had a chance to look at all this?

If nothing else, can you confirm how the manual advises you should restore to factory build. This will probably help me understand how they are sent out.

    Regards

    Simon

Ya the Laptop doesnt have Recovery CDs , all the recovery info is on a hidden partition on the hard drive. When i got the laptop the first thing i did was to make the recovery cds as suggested on the laptop, u can use 2 Dvds or 9 cds.

If u are going to format the laptop then i suggest u to get the laptop and make those recovery cds. Format using a winxp cd then when the laptop asks u for drivers etc etc just bung in those recovery discs.

    Hi Guys

Would really appreciate some help on this matter. I had a TR5 for a week last year and was hugely impressed. Do you recommend the T1XP over the TR5 if you have used both?

Also, how light is it in comparison to a 3KG Sony Vaio i currently use as a desktop replacement. I'd also love some high quality pictures or links to somewhere that has them as i have hardly seen any!

Cheers guys, for best response, email me at [email protected]

Head over to your Sony official website near you and all the faqs you need are displayed there. The T1XP is known as an ultra-portable and I think it comes out around 1.5kg??? This could be complete arse though ;).

Anyway if you are not in any hurry then Sony Japan have just released early specs of the T91 Carbon which is the T1XP in a sexy black suit (ok it's just a fecking laptop), but they have upped the specs slightly and now use a 1.2ghz processor instead of 1.1ghz on the T1XP. Also the HD will be 60gb (still 4200rpm) instead of 40 and we may get 1gb of RAM (although this is still and option in Japan) and there may be one or two other improvements but these are motherboard specific as the general form/functionality is pretty much as is.

Not sure when/if this will reach our shores....but fingers crossed.

    Cheers mate,

I'll have a look on there, it certainly seems to be a slightly upgraded larger version of the TR5 though.

Have you got a link to the T91s specification yet? I'm making a trip to Tokyo in the summer, so if it's out then i might pick one up, along with a PSP !

    Kahlua Fan: TR vs T1:

T1 has a newer processor with more cache. DVDRW is available. Bluetooth is standard (at least in the US). I like the layout better (the CD-ROM doesn't bump my gut.) TR has the camera. T1 is a little thinner. The T1 battery is pretty much the same as the TR Extended Capacity battery. Of course, the looks are completely different.

Both are close to the same in size, weight, and capability. You can't go far wrong with either.

For more reviews, try searching under the US name - T150.

Sony have let me know that the VGN-T2 is due to be released around March this year. I am hoping that it will have some of the spec confirmed on the new VGN-T91PS Carbon on the Sony Japan website.

New specs could include: new 1.2Gz Centrino processor, 1Gb RAM (although 512 is upgradeable ;) ), 60GB HD (still only 4200rpm) oh and the Carbon fibre case....mmm this could be a japanese only special, but would be nice if we got this.

    Hi Lustral,

I have a T16GP that doesnt come with recovery disc, would you mind to tell me how I can creat Recovery CDs from the hidden partition since I cannot find that hidden partition. Your advise is very appreciated.
