Hoping I'm not repeating a topic but I just found this forum and need help. It's this loud fan. My laptop (Sony VGN-S360) fan runs all the time. It will begin running full speed immediately after I've powered on. The computer is never hot to touch and the fan air is cool.

I've tried every scheme combination possible. Nothing seems to stop it from running.

Can anyone suggest a solution? Sony acknowledges this as a problem, but will not issue a fix.

    Thank you.

My wife has a VGN-S360 I bought her when it came out. It's been a great laptop except for that cursed fan. It wouldn't be so bad if you could somehow keep it at the same speed, then your brain could ignore it. But it's always calling attention to itself by changing speed, even when plugged in and not being used. No matter how I set the power management, as Zebbie observed.

I ran across this thread, which suggests the fan for the S560 (Sony part number 178730121) will fit, and is much quieter:
    http://www.notebookforums.com/thread118123.html

    Confirmed by this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=27425

I'm tempted to do it myself--anyone here have any experience with replacing the fan on the VGN-S models? This site provides quite a bit of help, even tells how to add a bluetooth module:
    http://www.edepot.com/reviews_sony_vaio_s.html

Then there's this free program I just stumbled across, don't know if it's compatible or not:
    http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Of course I should first try updating the BIOS, that might help.

Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the replies. I was pleasantly surprised how quiet my new AR290 is, but then it's double the weight of the S360.

Hi there, I have SONY VGN-S460 laptop. I will tell you what has happened already for 2 years, since I have it.

    1. Fan is extremely LOUD for 1.5 years.
    2. Black spot on the screen for 1 year already.
When I was choosing from the many Laptops in 2005, I bought this SONY, since I thought "that is a good quality, it's a sony, made in Japan"

Guess what, This sony was x2-3, the price of any other laptop, since it was sony. However it did not have any extra features, than the other laptops.

In reality, I would recommend buying any other laptop....why
    1. Less price X2-3
    2. Better service
    3. The fan is not on and LOUD all the time
    4. Nobody will come to and ask you:"Is this your Harley so LOUD, or your very expensive SONY laptop
    5. You would not disturb anybody with your EXTREMELY LOUD Sony

If you want to repair it they ask for half of the original price...which is actually the price of any other laptop!!!!!!!

    SONY means dead end!

I have changed the fan of my SZ after it started to become extreamly loud (bearings defect).
It was an very interesting experience, and with the leaked service manual much easier.
Changing the fan is much more difficult than the bluetooth module as the fan is connected to the mainboard. To get to the mainboard you have to disassemble almost everything, remove the hd, optical drive, display etc.
As the fan is one module together with the heat sink for chipset and GPU you also have to apply new thermal paste or a new thermal pad.

I am also trying to solve this on my VGN-BX295VP

I changed power management to adaptive, it reduced a bit, but this is not enough. I have been working with some very good sony earphones that work ouat as earplugs also, but this is making me stress.

I have installed SpeedDan 4.33 which allows me to monitor the temperatures. But I am tempted to scale down the CPU frequency, so I can let it chill out since nobody needs full power in basic features most of the time.

What do you guys have to say about changing the clock? I am a bit afraid of trying it, and I do not have data to do it. Reading this scares me:

"FSB is for Front Side BUS. It's the BUS clock speed for your CPU.
This is not for the faint hearted. Changing the FSB you can make your CPU run faster (but even slower, if you like), but, if you don't know what you're doing, it's likely that you'll end up hanging your PC :) This is, usually, not a problem." (SpeedFan help files)

    best regards

I can confirm that the S560 fan DOES NOT fit on the S360. I just received one today and although the fan itself is the same dimensions, the heatpipe / heatsink is in a different location relative to the fan.

You could maybe try to modify it to make it work but I feel more comfortable returning it and getting a S360 fan (p/n 178716612). Don't really want to break a $90 fan.

I used part number 1-787-458-11 (SONY VGN-SZ Cooling FAN Heatsink) for my VGN-SZ92S.

did it make a difference in reducing the fan noise? i just took apart and cleaned mine for the first time and immediately noticed a big difference in reduced heat but only a small difference in reduced fan noise.

After I replaced the fan my notebook was again as silent as when it was new. But one year later the replacement fan became loud again.
