I bought the Sony VPCSB16FG a month back which came with a preloaded windows 7 home premium 64bit edition. This laptop keeps rebooting in like 2-3 times in 15 days, there is no specific time or reason when it happens. I tried a complete restore from scratch, have updated all win7 patches except the service pack which gave me some errors.

Sometimes it reboots to a blue screen, at other times it just does a crash boot and gives me the windows safe boot prompt.

Am I the only one who is facing such issues with this notebook or there are others and is there a way I can resolve it ?

I otherwise love this laptop but the boot issue is really killing me and making me not trust the small beast.

Backed up the data and got a service ticket from Sony, awaiting for the guy to turn up.

I got extra 4Gb installed, do you think I should take it out before the service guy turns up or just leave it as it is ? I already tested the extra RAM using win7 memory test utility.

I think I was able to resolve the issue (crossing finger), I uninstalled Zone alarm internet security suit and installed windows security essentials. I've not booted once since then. :)

With this good news I've bought a Crucial M4 128 drive today, and am looking for a caddy for the SB series, think its still not out, anyone was able to locate one ?

I was helping a friend setting up a VPCSB16FG and it gave similar problems. Eventually, I did successfully installed Windows 7 SP1 on a new HDD. I think I managed to do that by installing the Sony Utilities/Vaio Care, Control Centre, etc.) only after finishing with Windows Updates. (In other words, install drivers, Security Essentials, and start doing Updates.)

But the machine has given one BSOD so far. Still monitoring...

I was able to install Windows 7 SP1 this time too, probably this was because I changed the extra 4GB ram, the earlier one gave me errors on tests.

Yes, that was something else I did with my friend's VPCSB16FB--remove the extra RAM. Seems to work better after that as well. But we did have one BSOD after that, so I think there may still be something not completely right about the machine.

The ironic thing is that I experienced no such problem whatsoever with my VPCSA25GG. What an extra SGD$500 can buy you, one might think...

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to update that the BSOD issue was caused by zone alarm internet security suit. I removed the same and moved to Microsoft's free security software, everything if good since.

I travel a lot and has been trying to find a better way to carry my laptop, the bezel gets scratched easily and I can already see the space key mark on the screen. I think the notebook needs more structural support from the crushing effect it faces inside the bag. I was thus surfing this forum and all over the internet to find a hard case that is not very costly and shud be light in weight. I thus liked the below for which I seek advice:

    1. Axio, ita made for macbook, don't know if it will support the vaio properly, any one using it with standard 13in laptops can put in their experiences.

    2. This carbon fiber case seems expensive but also feels the best

Have looked at other hard cases but none seems to provide support from crush effects.

    Thanks,
    Vineet
