Hi everyone, I'm French, and I want to install ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony serie Z laptop.
I see it is not very easy to have it.
So I'm here to need help.

    this is my configuration :
    - Intel® CoreTM i7-640M, 2,80GHz
    - 8 Go 1066MHz DDR3-SDRAM
    - NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M 1Go
    - 128 Go SSD Ultra-SATA

I try to install Ubuntu 10.10 but I have a full black screen after booting Ubuntu with Grub.

If someone know this laptop, I will appreciate help, I need it faster possible.

I see that I need to change the Kernel of my laptop, and I really don't want to make mistakes.

So I'm waiting for a good person helping me with my laptop.

Thanks all, have a good day.

Couldn't you just install VMware player and run it as a VM or do you want to use it as your prime OS?

    I've actually install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64.iso

    But I think there is a big problem, I don't have repertory : dev/sda
    etc..

so I cqnt see my file in my USB key to take Adam's kernel on it ?
How can I download this 3 files from this site :

Hacked Kernel for Sony Vaio Z

    linux-image-2.6.37-6-vaioz_2.6.37-6.16_amd64
    linux-headers-2.6.37-6-vaioz_2.6.37-6.16_amd64
    linux-headers-2.6.37-6_2.6.37-6.16_all

I need to download this files and put them on my laptop.

after this I think I will be able to get Ubuntu 10.10

    I got a bigger problem I think :

    I' go this :
    /dev/mapper/isw_djdhdcabci_Volume0 (ext4)

    I don't have /dev/sda .

I can't use cmt pkgd for exrtacting files.
I can't go see files on my Desktop.
    I think that I can't read my disk -_-
    why ?

I don't actually use any custom kernels.
    1. do the BIOS hack:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/473226-insyde-hacking-new-vaio-z-advanced-menu-bios.html
    2. enable static gpu switching
    3. use standard ubuntu dvd to install, don't restart
    4. revert to grub1:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reverting to GRUB Legacy
    5. i8042.nopnp=1 as kernel boot argument

You most likely have the RAID version of Z, try disabling RAID (change to AHCI in hacked BIOS), it most likely is incompatible with Linux.

Linux works just fine on the Z's raid, you just have to run a couple extra steps to install the bootloader. Been covered in the ubuntu on Z thread a few times.

I have no idea :) But if you try booting GRUB2 on Intel all you get is blank screen. GRUB1 and everything is ok. Unless my memory doesn't serve me well...

beaups - thanks for the explanation, I don't use RAID version.

    Non-raid Disk (59.6Go)
    Member Disk (59.6Go)
