My friend has a Sony Vaio VGN-cr123E
He ran Uniblue registry Cleaner and i'm guessing he wiped out something that he shouldn't have...
He can not get on the internet...It connects to the server (local lan) but can't get out to the Internet.
You guys have any idea what he might need to do to get his computer back on it's feet...
We are in China right now for work and we won't be going home untill June 20th. So, that means he does not have his recovery cd or vista cd with him. only thing he can hope for is something i can download for him and he can install...
We even had the IT guy here at work try to fix it but he don't speak too much English and is a challenge for him to even open up network settings![]()
Any help is much appreciated....Thanks in advance

What i would do is: 1) turn off any firewalls
2) go to start, type 'cmd', and do an ipconfig to see what IP address he's getting
3) check browsers (IE) file menu and make sure 'work offline' isnt checked and report back. if all ok, we will proceed from there! -
did the ipconfig...shows all 'media Disconnected"
Work offline is unchecked...
Still no good... -
you should see an IPv4 address under one of the "ethernet adapter network connections." when doing ipconfig. make sure to run as administrator and scroll up to see all results.
2) go to your device manager(right click computer, manage devices, device manager) and go to network adapters and double click your lan device to make sure it says "this device is working properly." restart pc also. -
He' is hard wired not wireless, We don't have wireless at work...I told him when he goes home tonight see if he can get on through his neighbors wireless just to see if he can get it to work that way...Also, I don't know if i told you but he has vista home premium....Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated...Thanks

whoa! im sorry i didnt realize hard wired. ive adjusted some of the above. anyway, other things to try are:
1) what brand/model of internet modem? does the light pattern look ok? always unplug power to modem and plug back in w/ computer off. so there is no router involved, right?
2) do you have a different laptop you can connect up hard wired to see if you can get online, get IP address, etc.
3) if he has multiple ethernet jacks on his computer..try the other jack.
btw, thats a nice configuration you have setup there w/ the i7-965! i have quad core qx6700 from the day it came out and still love this thing to this day!! -
We are at work so we are running off of a server..
He currently is showing no lights.
I'm on the server right now running with the same ip address just different work station..
I haven't asked to see if he has multiple internet jacks i will find out...
And thanks for the comment on the siggy...haha...I cant wait to test that bad boy out...be a few more weeks i'm presuming -
you say "he currently is showing no lights." do you mean no lights on the internet modem? if so, check all connections.
Ex. There should be at least 3 cords in the back of modem(power, coax, ethernet) and make sure power is still plugged to electrical outlet. Make sure the electrical outlet is providing power by plugging in a lamp or something to verify. Make sure electrical outlet isnt working off a light switch or is on a surge protector thats in the off position by mistake. -

lol, i knew it couldnt be that easy. did he try a system restore to the day before he ran the registry cleaner? or did he not want to go that route?
-
Ya, he tried that but couldn't go back far enough...For some reason he is telling me it will only let him go back 2 days
..I though you could go back further than that...
Well, guess you have done all you can do because i just recently found out that the IT guy here at work gave him a XP professional disk and he wiped out vista and installed that last night...haha..Little does he know that the drivers are totally different and about impossibe to obtain...So he turned a small problem into a major one...I can't beieve that the IT guy didn't know that...Hell i know that and i'm a novice.......Lookslike he will be without for a while because the only vista CD yo can get in China is in Chinese language...
I found the drivers for him, and gonna try to help him with that route...Damn I told him to give me 1 day to get some answers he wouldn't wait...I found out last night his sont vaio model has a built in recovery software...That would have been better than going his route..
Oh well thanks for the help, and if i need something else i will give you a shout back...
Thanks -
Too late now, but you could of tried setting the IP manually or also logging into the router/server (where ever DHCP is handled) and check to make sure there is a high enough ip range set.
Reinstall is a bit drastic of an action for such an issue.
On the flip side though, you've learned to not use registry "Cleaners" alll willy nilly without backing up the registry first.
