Ok fairly old Vaio laptop. Can barely get past start up screen. Half the time all i get is black screem when i turn it on. I can get into windows though after a few attempts. I would like to completely reformat it, preferably putting on xp or even the new Windows 7. But i dont have any boots discs. So i don't know how to go about doing it. A breif step by step on how to wipe my laptop would be perfect. Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ian

If you want to just wipe the HDD, remove it and put it into an enclosure.
Wipe it using another computer - if you want to instal XP to have a working laptop - try finding the model number/name - it should say somewhere on the laptop...

But I fear your hardware could be gone for good due to age...

Theres an easier way to wipe it. Just pop in an ubuntu live cd and use the disk manager to format. You won't have an OS though. Without any disks you wont really get anywhere.
