Are you sure the back light isn't just off. my sz640 will sometimes come out of hibernation or when restarting to go into stamina mode will go black. If i can catch a glare on the screen I can restart the computer and all is well.
If not same issue, try an external monitor to narrow down software or hardware issue. -
My VGN-NR498E has the same issues where occasionally when coming out of sleep mode or during a start up, my backlight doesn't turn on (although I don't get the VAIO BIOS splash screen even). I can see the screen with enough external light, and usually a restart or shutdown and power up fixes it (although last time it took me 3 shutdowns before it came back). This never happened until I upgraded to Windows 7, and I did go to Intel and download the latest chipset drivers for the 965 Express graphics. It doesn't bother me much, but it drives my wife crazy. Has anybody else experienced this and/or found a fix other than restarting until it comes up?

No the bios options aren't even coming, all i see is the Viao symbol and the screen goes blank with a blinking underscore _

Reset the bios.

If you see a Vaio logo and nothing else, it's not a virus.
If you see the bios come up and then a drive or OS error, then yes, it's a virus/malware or bad drive. For malware, the bios or OS will tell you something. -
Do you have a disc in the cd/dvd drive? Remove it. If still no boot then you have either corrupted hdd (virus perhaps) or physically damaged hdd. If you put your ear against the machine do you hear a repetitive clicking pattern? If so, it usually means dead HDD.
