While other laptop manufacturers claim the direct connection provides full HD video and sends audio through the TV’s speakers without any issues whatsoever, I understans aforesaid is not the case with Sony. According to Sony to hear sound from a device (TV) connected to the HDMI, you need to change the Sound Output Device Click (Start) and Control Panel> Click Hardware and Sound>Click Hardware and Sound>Click the Playback tab>Ensure there is a check mark next to HDTV icon>Set Default>Click OK. To hear sound from the (Laptop) again you must reverse the setting.

If you’ve recently purchased a laptop with an HDMI port, connected to your HDTV what settings do you recommend.

It depends on what software dvd player you use ..

With Cyberlink PowerDVD 12 with HDMI connection ..

The sound switch to TV as soon as I connect HDMI cable to it .

[Remember to connect HDMI cable to TV first before you click play]

Thank you for replying. Rider, can you elaborate further?

    Connect HDMI
    Turn on TV>laptop
    F7>external-monitor-only
Will image (desktop) at this time display FULL SCREEN 1080P (1920×1080) and AUDIO on TV without user input or further settings?
    Insert DVD>Play
Or will 1080P FULL SCREEN and audio on TV display only after DVD>play?
    Stop>F7>laptop-screen-only>disconnect HDMI
Will audio go back to laptop speakers at this time without user input?

What program do you use to play blurays?
Did you open up the program prior to or after inserting blueray?
Where you prompted to download anything before blueray started playing?

If Your laptop comes with Blue-ray player then Cyberlink PowerDVD will play with the out put 1080P or the highest of TV resolution .

I just happen to use Cyberlink P.DVD 12 ... [did not mean to advertise it]

You don't need to set anything ... NOR download before playing .

    Tv on
    plug in HDMI cable
pop dvd in laptop & play ... that's it .

"You will see it shows show both TV and laptop"

Of course, if your display mode is set to clone, then both TV and your laptop screen will show the same resolution. You should set the TV screen resolution separately, then move your video player window to the TV screen (grab the title bar and drag it there).

    No ... Not really ..

The player will recognize the TV's resolution and adjust the out put to match it ..

I don't see the option to set it "clone" .. Don't mater to me though .

Thank you for the suggestions, I'm half way there but few times Ive been so frustrated. i'm so confused, discouraged and sick to top it off after two migraines today(if you haave or know someone that does its HELL) today i waited to feel somewhat better to type this.

I know theres a lot of very smart persons here that can help me resolve the issues currently faced.

What might be optimal if someone with a sony vaio look at their settings and if they have Intel Graphics Media Controll Panel icon in taskbar or hidden what their settings are so i can set mine the same.

My laptop screen is supposed to be 1366 x 768 according to specs if that makes a difference

First The Sony Vaio manual like most is USELESS says under Changing the Resolution(size) of the Screen Image on an HDMI Connected Device: Double click hdmi resolution setting icon in taskbar>click resolution tab and select resolution. Well the tab was open with what looks like three tv screens each with a resolution number under and 720 was default and 1080 greyd out if i choose 768 i still get the notice from Intel graphics saying not optimal claiming 1366 x 768 is optimal.

Second The Sony Vaio manual lis USELESS. It also claims If the computer image does not fit displayed region of tv click adjust resolution. Guess what thats grayed out too.

Connected HDMI and laptop desktop showed on tv in adition to laptop, Great but on the TV the screen stretches outside of viewing area and resulting in icons and taskbar not fully displaying.

An icon popped up HDMI Resolutions Settings icon and a box vaio control panel with what looked like 3 tv screens side by side with settings under them 720 768 1080 with 1080 being grayed. The setting that was dotted by default was the 720. I tried to choose 768 to see if TV screen would shrink a little (not shop off all around) and a message game up this is not optimal setting optimal resolution 1366 x 768 so i set back to what it was 720. icon popped up Intel Graphics Media Controll Panel and a message to click on it. if you double click its more of a drop down thing and these are the choices already there,

***BTW you will see below apparently either as default or auto chose when HDMI was connected it has digital tv first and then built in display, thats really odd***

    graphic options> clone display
digital tv + built in display
    panel fit>digital tv>scale full screen
    built in display>maintain aspect ratio

I did not touch anything and clicked away from it to close it since it was a drop down thing

i then clicked on desktop and chose screen resolution so i can give as much information as possible and this is what was there it showed what appeared to be one movitor with a circle in the mddle slit in half with a 1 on one side and a 2 on the othet inside the circle
    1/2 multiple monitor
    1280 x 720
    landscape
    duplicate the display
this is currently your main display

if you open up the drop down resolution there is no 1080 only other resolutions to choose one of them looking like a familiar 1366 x 768

I cancelled to make sure nothing saved unplugged hdmi and turned off computer

Not before testing a youtube video although desktop and web page seemed outside of viewing area on tv (chopped a little all around) i clicked play on youtube and hit the youtube full screen and the video seemed ok and the audio went straight to tv with laptop speakes quiet and when I unplugged hdmi later sound went vback to laptop like said in one of the responses.

I'm concerned that with the 720 default thats locked in I wont get 1080p even on bluerays or dvds. It auto detected those settings on its own.

so to sum up apparently audio goes to tv as soon as hdmi is plugged and back when its unplugged but i would really like to get the screen size issue fixed. one more thing when I pressed info on the tv remote while the tv was in the hdmi source to look at the resolution it claimed 1920 x 1080 if that makes a difference bit that doesnt resolve the problem i described earlier

Excuse me for the long post but I wanted to provide as much info as possible.

What do you want? My preference is:
    Laptop display: 1600x900 (default)
    TV screen: 1920x1080

Clone display mode tries to force both screens to the same resolution, and as the laptop screen cannot go beyond what it is capable of, that then becomes your resolution for both screens. This is not good. Use this mode only if your laptop also has a 1080p screen.

Keep your laptop screen as your primary display. That lets you change resolutions for the TV screen independently. Go to display properties and choose extend my desktop onto this monitor. Avoid setting your TV as the primary display. If you have to use the TV as the primary display, e.g. for gaming, then remember to switch back to having the laptop screen as the primary display when you're done before disconnecting or switching OFF the TV.

Sorry I can't be more specific as my laptop has both Intel and nVidia and the HDMI works only with the nVidia.

At clone mode, you can't have 2 different resolutions.
    Lowest resolution takes priority.
