i faced the same problem and the solution was :
Open action center (near windows date and time )
    click on troubleshooting
    programs
rest windows media player and windows media library to default setting

What happens if you DO set it to do something? Try setting it to sleep just to see if there is any difference in the behavior. It sounds like the "default" setting is to power off. But that is a bit strange. Does it go off instantly? As an aside, it is generally though that it is NOT a good idea to run a laptop with the lid closed. The heat buildup inside CAN be damaging to the display and system itself.

I will try this (dont have pc in my possession at this time) but as soon as i get with the owner we'll try this solution. thanks for the response.

yes your right, i apologize, i'm simply just used to returning 24 hours later to some sort of response. I was almost afraid this may be a dead forum, thanks for the responses. I was simply being inpatient and apologize for my rudeness.

I set the settings to do both, Sleep when closing the lid, and it shuts off on lid close. not shuts down, shuts completely off :( . same happens when i have setting set to "do nothing"

Why would a computer have a default setting to power off without properly shutting down first? To answer your question YES it does in fact go off instantly requiring me to select Start windows normally on startup, becuase of the failed proper shutdown.

When you installed the OS did you install ALL of the Sony drivers and auxillary apps (like the Sony Libraries)? And did you follow the recommended sequence for these things?

What happens if you go into the BIOS and while the BIOS interface is on the screen, you close the lid? I would think if it powers off then, you have a hardware issue of some sort.
