I'am looking into buying a sony vaio f13 series and was wonder if i bought the notebook with a i7-740qm now, could i upgrade the the cpu later myself. I know on some notebooks the cpu in soldered in. The reason why i was thinking about doing this is because the i7-840 is a 325 dollar option. I was just curious if the i7-840qm and the i7-940xm would work in this notebook or not

I can not be entirely sure but I think you can, since people have done similar things to the current E series. However, I would strongly suggest not to do so. One reason being that a 740qm to a 840qm upgrade might not worth its money. Secondly, With 940xm, some people have said that the core would generate much more heat that the F series might not be able to cope.

In my opinion, I think you should get the i7-840qm configured F13 now if you have the cash, since it might be more expensive to do it afterward or not even be able to do so. If not, then the 740qm is already quite good enough. ;)

    I have to agree.

My rule of thumb is always to go for the best processor - I have the 840qm and it is worth it imo
