Hi, I have had a Sony Vaio F series laptop for about two years now--purchased as a refurb. In the last couple of months I noticed that sometimes it would suddenly shut down, with no warning.

I tried reinstalling my operating system recently, but that has not fixed the problem.

I also installed Speedfan recently, even though my fan appears to be working normally. I noticed that the core temperatures can climb to > 55C or higher, but the shutdown problem doesn't appear to hinge on the temperature--when I unplug the computer to run on battery, it's generally quite cool, but instant shutdown still happens.

Once it starts shutting down, though, it will be more likely to repeat the behavior upon restarts. If I let it sit for a while or overnight, it *seems* to me that it behaves for a longer period of time.

Shutdown seems to occur at random times, not necessarily while gaming. Sometimes just while in notepad, typing.... I need my computer for work quite often, and this is reaalllyyy becoming a problem :(

Any ideas on what could be the cause of the problem? Hardware/software? Something I need to take in to be fixed, or something I can tinker with myself?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

    Hey Val,

It seems to me like your machine has broken a connection point under the GPU. After many heat cycles, the metal tends to expand and contract thus taring at the seams. Many computers face this problem. What you need to get is a reflow of your GPU; in very severe cases a "reball". You can have that reflow ordered for your motherboard with us at shadyrepairs.com. Just buy the online repair ticket and send in your motherboard for a reflow.

Hope to hear from you soon,
    Shady

GPU won't let it shutdown. There are a lot of GPU problems out there which require repairs, but not all cause shutting down suddenly.
Not even sure if OP laptop has discrete GPU yet.
First, you can try to clean and clear Fan, Heatsink, and apply new thermal paste. Most sudden shutting down caused by CPU overheat.

Yeah, have the same problem on a 5 year old thinkpad. Apply new thermal paste on the cpu and gpu under the heat sinks and it should be good to go, make sure you remove the old paste first.
