Just got my new sony vaio and    Stuck pixel!!!! What the hell sony, why do you have to give me a stuck pixel for ! Its stuck on the colour turquoise AND IM SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT ASKING FOR A REPLACEMENT !

A few other things to say about the notebook like a mini review!

    The Good
    • the keyboard is the nicest one i have ever used on a notebook
    • the x-bright screen is truly excellent
    • nice thin and compact notebook

    Right the bad
    • touch buttons are too noisy and hard to click
    • the fan is to noisy, you can hear it when the fan kicks in, then dies down abit
    • the bluray tray scrapes the desk when you try to open the tray
    • the spacebar makes a loud noise when hit firmly

Other than that everything is fine at the moment :( but that stuck pixel, how am i going to send a notebook back with just one stuck pixel?

Please help I’m dying here spent £1000 $2000 on this thing and they gave me a dud. I knew this was going to happen to me it always does, i even said before in other posts that this would happen and it did, should have touched wood ai!!

have you tried rubbing your screen or using special software to unlock the pixel?

If that doesnt work and you cant stand the noise of the fan id say return it.
Do mind that you might findthe fan noisey but that is up close. When im a couple meters away from it i cant hear it on mine.

About the fan: there is an easy solution called undervolting.

Just tried the rubbing the screen trick but didn’t work, and tried a program where you leave this flashing image on the screen. Tried that for an hour as well but didn’t work either! What do you think I should do, I hate stuck pixels ruins the whole computer!

If I decide to take it back what should I say, being that there may be something wrong with the bluray drive where it scrapes the desk every time it is opened! So should I tell the truth and say that there is a dead pixel on the screen, and the disk drive scrapes agenised the desk as it is opened.

Or I could say that the fan drives me crazy, but that would not enable me for a replacement ! If I bought it from the sony shop I could have checked this sort of thing out, but pay £150 for the privilege!

What to do!! I just think it has got to go back! But how ??

In the netherlands we are protected by the remote selling law. It means we can return it within 7 days for any reason, as long as it looks new. Don't know if there is any law like that in UK.

Rightmark's CPU utility works with Montevina. Undervolting does, but not the advanced chipset features (C4, etc).

I think that I am just going to make some crap story about the bluray drive and the fact that is a bit loose in the notebook, and makes this squeaking noise when it is pushed upwards! I could live with it but the stuck pixel is the main problem. Does anybody else have the problem where they open there bluray tray and it scrapes across the desk, or squeaks for that matter ?

I will also mention the dead pixel too, but I won’t make it the main subject in question, as they will just not take me seriously!

I’ve have been given a replacement notebook! This old one has to be picked up tomorrow. Ow yes Sony has not let me down, I think there might be a Zero dead pixel policy at the place I bought the notebook from, that and the loose bluray tray!

Great news :D :D :D will post results when new notebook arrives, but must just say the FW is excellent even with the problems that mine came with. I can’t wait until my perfect one comes is a few days time!! I just hope the replacement process goes smoothly.

I’m just very picky as I will be keeping this notebook for three years, so I will need a perfect one! And £1000 pounds should give you perfect! :p

About the pixel - are you sure its the screen??
4 pixels in the SZ act oddly with the NVidia card and ICQ 6 (used the NVidia for about 2-3weeks, and else just for minutes, don't need it)

So your not running any software are you?

I've had terrible experiences with stuck pixels myself. Some people are so lucky never having had to deal with one, but others seem to always get the short end of the stick. I once went through three 12" PowerBooks and finally the fourth one had no stuck pixels and only one dead pixel in the corner, so I kept it. Prior to that, each PowerBook seemed to have 1-3 stuck red pixels in the centre of the screen. On a 1024x768 display it stood out like a soar thumb. Now that is either very bad luck or a very bad batch of displays!

I am seriously debating getting a CTO Z laptop, but my past experiences are keeping me from placing the order. Thats why in the past I have always bought pre-config models which I can return if they have a stuck pixel.

Good luck with your next one..

Yes i hope that it was just a bad one and not the whole batch that’s doggie. And regarding luck my first notebook a HP Pavillion DV2000 was perfect. I would of thought that a Sony would have a better build quality and screens than any HP.

If think it was definitely a stuck pixel, apart from on a red screen the pixel would look black, with the stuck pixel being a turquoise colour "cyan". Must be a sub pixel or something

With the software the only things that ive tried is rubbing tapping etc, while playing the jscreenfix, but no luck after 10 mins of tapping ect, then 30 leaving it playing, ! Pointless I think as ive had this on a 22 inch lcd monitor and it never worked, so I just sent that back too. But in terms of software on the FW the thing was still completely standard out of the box so ??

They may very well do (or might not)... but your expectations are too high here. Like it or not, the manufacturing tolerances for stuck/hot/dead pixels are pretty high. If they weren't, then the yields for QA'd screens would be so low that each one would cost an absolute fortune. (I know £1000 is a lot, but you're getting a lot of tech for that too.)

The only screens that are guaranteed not to have any problem pixels are in professional displays that cost *a lot* - sometimes several times what your laptop cost. Most retailers who operate 'no dead pixel' policies do so on their own... they can't return the screen to the manufacturer as faulty if it's within the tolerances deemed OK, so they just try to push the 'faulty' screen onto another unsuspecting buyer. :(

Yeah we have that in the UK - its called the distance selling act. I think its for 14days and covers all mail, catalogue, internet and telephone shopping orders. Basically it's to make sure you don't get ripped off as buying things without seeing them could spell trouble (magazines can make things more snazzy than they really are).

However, with that said more and more companies are charging a restocking fee if the product is not faulty. Main reason being is that many consumers intially didn't know their buying rights in the UK but as they became more astute, businesses had to act accordingly to ensure they didn't make a loss as returned goods obviously cannot be resold as 'new'.

    Anyway back to laptops :D

Glad to see TrisTan 08 that your laptops being replaced
