    Sony Vaio FZ Screen Issue

Overnight a problem with the screen on my Sony Vaio FZ has become apparent. A think multi colour bar had started to appear at the bottom of the screen. I am not entirely sure if the problem is related to the 8400GT graphics processor, I have had a preciously faulty one replaced which I hope reduces the likelihood that the graphics processor is the culprit. I am just going through now backing up my data in case the fault spreads further. My eye sight may not be sharp enough but it may have expanded.

Note that in the pictures attached it appears green but when I have something else up as wallpaper, or a program open, the colours change to reflect in some way what is on the rest of the screen. For example when I have word opinion the blue background appears black on the bar, the text area is a shade of grey. Also, my taskbar is not that thick. My available space on screen has not gone away as much as the fault bar suggests it should have, it is as though my screen has adjusted in some way.

Try to conenct an external monitor to see if you get the same results.

Such an obvious thing to do thank you. I will find out a bit later whatthe result of that test is.

I have tried plugging an external monitor into the laptops VGA port and the external monitor worked as it should, no problems there.

I could still possibly have a wiring fault despite this though, right? Anything else it could be?

I think there is an issue with the LCD display and not a wiring fault.

    Okay thank you.

Any ideas how much it could cost to replace since I am no longer covered by warranty? I would rather Sony replace it, or at least an authorised service provider.

That's a good question. Would start buy calling Sony and asking them for a part number and to see what a new LCD would cost. I you think you might want to do it yourself, you can try searching eBay for the part number. Be sure to ask Sony for a repair manual.

Just to finish off the story I went into Service Plus in Wellington New Zealand, the local repair agent for Sony Vaio notebooks. They were able to tell me quite quickly that only that part of the screen has failed and that it is unlikely to spread. For me to replace the screen it would cost NZ$620 for the screen and a further NZ$170 if they were to install. I decided it was not worth it and will just keep using the notebook until the whole thing goes. My parents have offered to give me their current computer monitor when they get a new computer later in the year.

Too dodgy for my liking, especially with the need for international shipping.

I just sent Sony a e-mail compaining about my notebook and all the various problems it has had. I imagine they will just rofl at and add it to the pile though but writing it some how made me feel better.

    Thanks Skye2 for your help.
