My friends model Sony Vaio FZ (VGN-FZ17G) which is the exact same model as mine currently ran into a hardware problem with the GPU (NVIDIA 8400M GT) which is causing his computer to crash and has since turned the GPU off and is running on board graphics. Apparently its going to cost him about 1k (AUD) as its out of warranty to fix as they need to also replace the Motherboard.

He does play quite a few games on it unlike me which I use this computer mainly for design work.

This got me thinking since I've always told him my notebook always runs reasonably hot and thus the fan goes up and down loudly which he never really experienced nor ever complained about haha.

Long story short - I've just installed the speedfan application

I've had this computer up running the entire day doing basic work like internet browsing/photo viewing and Photoshop usage. Currently its idling at

    GPU 75C
    CORE1 70
    CORE2 70

are these temperatures normal on the vaio FZ notebook models?
    what are yours?

these will only go higher when playing a video game such as Left 4 Dead or video rendering with Premiere Pro if these are just basic work temps and that's a bit worrying for me.

If those are just idle temps, they're abnormally high. Using CoreTemp (which, in my experience, seems to report higher than any other program), I get idle temperatures of around the high 20s to upper 30s. My old laptop (single core AMD Turion 64) idled around higher 30s.

Normally, idle temps should be in the 30s-40s.

I use 3 different power options, one for regular use, low CPU, Vaio optimised and full power (for audio, video editing, rendering etc). Unless I use the low CPU setting the Vaio gets rather hot, the hottest is always the GPU but comparable to your values.
I had louder/hotter Vaios before but I hate noise of any kind and want to use FZ as long as I can so hope that using low settings can prolong the lifespan.
Using notebook stand that keeps the bottom free helps too.
