I have an old Sony Vaio Model PCG 8WIM (also called a VGN AR21S) which runs Windows XP media centre Edition 2005. I have never used HDMI interface before and believed it was plug and play. Sadly it wasn't. TV just tells me that there is no connection. I am not a computer expert so ....help!

is there any button on the keyboard (Fn+F7, maybe?) to turn on the video signal for external displays?

you should try setting up multiple monitors inside your GPU app. With Vaio VGN-Z, I have to do this from Nvidia Control Panel (one time) and then it works.

in NCP under Display menu, I have option Set up multiple displays.
This menu gives you 3 options:
1. Only use one display (single) - this is selected by default when no external display is connected to laptop.
2. (Clone) - you see same content both on your TV and laptop
3. (Extended or Dual View) - I use this mode
Then you should go Display>Change resolution where you can separately change res for your laptop and your TV (if they have different native resolutions, eg in my case TV has 1920x1080 and Z has 1600x900 res). This can only be done if you have chosen option 3. from above.
Sometimes after all things set up, you simply need to unplug/re-plug HDMI cable to make everything work. As I said this should be done one time only. Depending on your Nvidia card and software, you may have slightly different options in NCP.
Let me know if it works.

Thank you for your continuing help, I am sure we are now on the right lines. However I have just looked at the Nvidia and, whilst it intimates that dual/multiple connections are possible, when you click on change display it appears to have only a single display option. I looked at help and it said that I should plug in my PCI or AGP video adapter into an available slot and Windows will detect the additional display...... no mention of HDMI.
So, help again please!!!

when you plug-in HDMI into laptop, do you get small icon on the right side (where clock icon is)? Does the screen flicker for a sec? Does your laptop "see" HDMI cable connected?
You should also try this: Control Panel> Vaio Control Centre and then on the right side you have a list. Go to Display> HDMI resolution setting or External Display detection settings and see if some of the options may help you.
As for NCP, there is no specific HDMI option there. When you plugin HDMI to TV and laptop (make sure that TV is ON), then you can select one of those 3 options from my previous post.
Until you setup this properly in laptop, TV won't show you anything. btw did you select right external channel on TV? I have (Sony Bravia) 5 aux channels, and right connection (for me) was at ex. 4

if your running XP you sometimes have to reboot with the HDMI cable in and the tv on hdmi input other wise the software can't see it.
I used to have problems with xp like this and all it takes is a reboot with the cable connected to the tv and then all the options you need will be there.
Vista and Win 7 can auto detect and will switch as soon as a new monitor is detected. -

Glad you make it
And please don't be shy to ask, that's the whole purpose of this forum.
