So i bought a Sony Vaio the one with Blue R. and HDMI output. I also bought a Sylvania 32" tv with dual HDMI ports. Now i hook up my laptop with the HDMI cable and i have sound and video, lovely. So i also bought a Sony theater system, now it doesn't have HDMI and i'm confused at how i might go about setting up my player (laptop) my TV and my Receiver(theater system).

So i want to use my DVD/Blue ray player to play video on my tv and have surround sound, is this possible and how would i do it?

I'm not very knowledgeable in this area so help would be appreciated.

Does the Sony Sound System have a HDMI Input and output? cos If it does, you route the HDMI through the sound system first and that picks up the sound and then attach another HDMI cable from the system to the TV for Picture.

Otherwise you will need to hook up an optical 3.5mm cable to the Home theatre for surround sound, and a HDMI cable from PC to TV for video and just disable audio through the HDMI in the Sound properties within Vista.

    hope that makes sense.

I believe you need a Home theater/receiver with HDMI to do that, unless your Vaio has optical out.

Sony Vaio > receiver > TV. (all through HDMI)

The other option would be if your Vaio has optical out to connect the Vaio to your receiver.

Well sir thank you for the help, now the Receiver doesn't have an HDMI, so i'll try the optical 3.5mm cable. I have normal audio cables running from the tv to the receiver which doesn't seem to change anything, now maybe i need to change the Vista properties as you have suggested.

Now would that be the S video out port?

so what you're saying is that you're going to use your laptop as a blu-ray player to play it on your tv with surround sound?

if that's the case, my roomate actually has the similar setup, he uses an optical out from the tv to his surround sound and he programmed the tv to use the surround sound instead the tv's speaker

    hope that helps

yup...if your receiver does not have HDMI, i'm sure it will have an optical cable input. Just run your HDMI to your tv, then run an optical cable to your receiver from the tv. The normal stereo RCA cables don't work because they only transfer an analog source, such as TV sound...the HDMI will send a digital signal, therefore needing the optical. You may want to leave the RCA cable connected to the receiver as well so you can watch tv with the surround sound speakers. Make sure to turn the TV speaker off in the menu though.

In vista, you will have to go into the audio settings and enable the audio through HDMI. This will disable your computer speakers, so when you disconnect the HDMI, you will have to turn back on the computer speakers by enabling them in the menu.

Buddy17 thanks for the help, and everyone else here. I'm going to try the optical cable tomorrow. I'll update from that point.
