    Hi all,

    I have a Sony Vaio FW21L which i purchased in Feb 09

Basically the left hinge has broke (where the charger plugs in) and it now doesnt charge unless i hold the lead at a certain angle

I have done some research and discovered this is a common problem with the sony laptops that have these types of hinges (a design flaw) where the hinge breaks off with people constantly putting in and taking out the charger lead

People are saying that sony is charging anything up to £160 just to look at the laptop

Will i be able to get the laptop fixed for free or get a new one because it is very unusable and i shouldnt have this problem with a 9 month old laptop that cost £650

You're correct in that this is a design flaw & that Sony is aware that the issue is widespread. However, unless they've officially announced this, which they rarely do, they probably won't cover the cost.
