When I insert a disk, the disk spins for a second and then stops. Then again spins and again it stops. This happens 4 times and then doesn't spin at all. After this, without removing the disk when I click on the CD/DVD drive icon in the My Computer section I get an error "D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Is this DVD drive broken and needs to be repaired or is this a problem with operating system, registry or drivers?

Is this happening with all CDs, try to verify they work on another pc? Also download the latest driver and firmware for your cd drive from sony website. What model vaio is this?
-
It seems the problem is occurring with all CDs and DVDs. It is .an s series, the model number is VPCSB17GG. I have tried reinstalling the drivers, I cannot find the firmware. It could just use the generic firmware. Should I try reinstalling windows 7 again?
Do you need to buy this specific DVD-RAM UJ8A2AS drive that is specific to Sony vaio or is there a generic DVD drive that is the same specification. I can easily replace this DVD myself by just removing two screws at the base if this is the problem.

Are you in India? Cause that model of Vaio is an asian model? If you have proof of purchase and it has been less than a year, you may be able to have it replaced by Sony for free.
For future reference this is the page for your model Support for VPCSB17GG : S Series (VPCS) : VAIO® Notebook & Computer : Sony Asia Pacific
First try cleaning the lens of your CD drive with some rubbing alcohol and q-tip to see if the lens being dirty is causing this.
Unfortunately another drive might not work you'd have to get one specific for Sony ie.( the exact same unit),as they get these drives made specifically for themselves and they apply their own firmwares to them so a generic or ie, a Toshiba or Dell laptop version of the DVD-RAM UJ8A2AS may not work on a Vaio.
Even if it would work you'd have to modify it to fit by removing the front cover and eject buttons so it would fit in your Sony.laptop case Also sony might have a whitelist or a block on non Sony version of certain replacement parts so it might not even detect it in the BIOS.

Also look into this if you are running Windows 7 which version OS are you using, by any chance did you recently format or reinstall windows? Matshita DVD ram Driver not working since Windows 7 installed - Microsoft Community -
I am in Melbourne, Australia which falls under this Asian region, it is not under warranty. Thankyou for your help, I did read other posts about this issue online.I will try to clean the laser lens tomorrow and see if that resolves this issue.
I have tried data DVDs as well as DVD films and audio CDs the same issue occurs. It is set to region 4. I am using windows 7 professional 64bit and did not reinstall or format recently. I did install and UN-install an Audio program recently that altered some audio drivers and other similar programs but that issue seems to be resolved.
Can you purchase these official Sony replacement DVD drives online somewhere that ship internationally. -
I attempted to clean the laser. It is actually worse now, the tray opening function is not working and the DVD is not recognized. The old issue is still present.
