Hey,
I have a Sony Vaio FW and it states that the maximum ram is 4GB (which I currently have) on crucials and Sonys website.
However the laptop has a PM45 Mobile Express Chipset and on Intels website it states that it can take 8GB.
I bought my FW around the time they first came out last year.
My question is, will I be able to install 8 or 6GB RAM despite the limitations that Sony have said?

-
yeah you should be fine.... just make sure you are using a 64bit OS, and the correct amount of RAM will show up.
-
Say my laptop didnt support it and I put a 4GB RAM in a single slot, would it fry the Mother Board or would It just not Boot?
-
It just wont boot. Theres no reason it would fry it.
-
Yeah definitely would not fry anything.. It might beep at you though
-
Do you think its worth giving it a try? I would perhaps buy one 4GB unit and try with that, to make up 6GB RAM and then purchase another 4GB eventually to make up 8GB.
Would that work, as they would not be matching pairs? -
Sony sells 4GB + 2GB combos for 6GB RAM on its CTOs all the time. However, it is distinctly possible that the computer's first FW1 incarnation was not designed to fit the larger combos -- although it is simply more likely that that was just what they decided on for marketing purposes as they projected the evolution of the series over a year or two's time.
I know that the keyboard wiring pattern changed from model to model, even though the keyboard parts remained interchangeable. -
Yea, thats what I thought. I was just wondering why some models say 8GB and some say 4GB Maximum, because the chipsets are all the same. Unless they can impose a limitation on the motherboard. Or simply because 4GB modules were not available at the time of the release of the FW series and they simply have not updated the specs or have just chosen not to.
But I can always give it ago, and if it doesn't work I can just send it back or sell it on. -
Let us know one way or the other!
