    Hi everyone,

I have a Sony Vaio (VGN-FJ270) and it is not reading any discs! I am trying to read a software installation cd, but nothing shows up. The same thing goes for dvds and cds. Please help! I'm desperate!

    Hi Arrabelle,

Even though they're obvious, make sure you've done these things:

    - Restart.
    - Go to My Computer and check that the disc icon is not there (it might just be AutoPlay that is broken).
    - Check with Sony - call their support hotline.

It's either a software or hardware issue here. If it's software, it should be fixed fairly easily; if it's hardware-related, then it gets more difficult because the notebook would have to be repaired.

    A quick question:

Did Sony include a Windows XP / Vista install disc in the box? Does the FJ have a "Recovery" partition (you can see if it does in My Computer)?

If it is a software issue you might have to reinstall Windows (which would require to you back up all of your data).

    Keep us informed,

    --Tom

I think this'll boil down to a hardware issue.
Have you touched the lense by accident? Or it was like that...
Generally any drive would read CDs without a driver, just running on Windows, the newer ones (less than 8 years old) will also read DVDs without any drivers, so I'm pretty sure its a faulty drive.
