Just a quick update, the 3 green leds for capslock number lock and scroll lock all light up, the power led is on green, battery is amber and the hd light lights amber briefly and seems to be reading the disk, fans come on, cd drive spins up and lights up when i put a os disk in, then nothing no bios post or anything. Anyone know the procedure for flashing the bios on this machine?

    MODEL is VGN-N38E

    Try static discharge (SD)
    - remove battery and PSU, press power button approx 15 sec.
    after try start.

if not help remove one of memory and retry again SD

VGN-N series has problem with memory parity issue, if you not been success please contact me [email protected]

Tried removing battery and holding power button already. I've just tried removing each 512mb ram module in turn and doing above reset, still same. Also tried reseating the keyboard ribbon cable and checking hard drive is seated ok.

    Any other ideas?

    Cheers for help so far.

I have tested the hard drive and ram modules in a working laptop and both are fine. I've tried another hard drive and ram module in the sony and its still not booting. The battery is fine and charging as it should, mainboard looks ok, no signs of heat damage, checked all connections. Just got to check the cpu is seated properly and check the heatsink is making good contact. Also need to test the mainboard battery is good.

I did notice a couple of things on the mainboard, an empty socket near the bottom left next to the hard drive, not sure what this is for or if anything is missing? Also 4 tiny dip switches, I assume these are to alter the FSB etc for different models, does anyone know the default positions? Or maybe a mother board manual, its an MBX-160.

    Any ideas?
