I was given a PCG-FR130 laptop which is dead. When one uses the AC adapter which is outputting 19.5 V DC none of the lights turn on nor does the harddrive spin up. Does this Sony require a operating battery so that the AC adapter works or can the battery be removed when running in AC?

You don't need a battery to use the AC adapter. Could be a motherboard issue.

Nope, it doesn't require a battery to work, it should work without the battery inserted.
