I am trying to reformat a friend's Vaio but he did not make Recovery discs. Any ideas please how I can do this? Its Model : PCG-7N1M and VGN-FE21S

You can still try to create a recovery disc if you haven't yet formatted the drive and if he has still got the recovery partition.

Thanks, I will look in to how to do that. Trouble is now his laptop keeps switching off . But thanks for suggestion.

Hmm... Maybe you should start a thread with the symptoms.
It switches off - doers it just shut down, crash?
Do create a thread with a detailed post - it may be possible to eliminate that issue. -
When I had to restore my laptop without recovery discs I was able to get into the Vaio Recovery Center on the computer and then used that to Reformat the drive.
Good luck and I hope this helps -
If your friend has not deleted the recovery partition boot up and press F10 and that should launch the recovery centre.

While you are doing the recovery, follow my guide here to get rid of the bloateware. Post #672 (altho it is for TT, but the general principle should apply):
