I came from an HP Elitebook (i5, SSD, 1600x900 14.1 display, metal hinges) and had to get rid of it because I dropped it one too many times and the screen was messing up.
I ended up getting a Sony Vaio SVE14a35cxh. It is only a year old model and besides the buttonless touchpad, the speakers are horrible!
I can barely hear them, even with volume all the way on full blast. It came with the factory Windows 8, and when I'm watching a youtube video I have to be very close to hear them. I ended up formatting and installing a fresh Win 8.1. Same thing.
Yes volume is on full blast on the video player and Windows. Is this normal? I mean this was a $890 laptop when purchased (I bought it used for $305 on ebay, and they included the original receipt).
My HP with one blown out speaker was louder!

Yeah, yeah, we know. They suck; no arguments about that. The VAIO Z series came with Sennheiser noise cancelling headphones as a peace offering. Check out some of the other threads on this topic; some people have reported significant improvements using different drivers. Sounded the same on my system, so ymmv.
