Has Sony upgraded any of the hardware for the Windows 8 refresh? Specifically, the IPS screen and its terrible color gamut?

I hope they have. The S15 is a beautiful laptop. Unfortunately, I returned mine because I couldn't get used to the absence of reds.

    Any info is appreciated.

According to my S15,I don't think the colors for the IPS panel so bad,I took I lot of photos for red/orange object, but I can still clearly see the red

I think Sony hasn't refreshed the S15 hardware at all, they will simply sell it with Win 8 instead of Win 7. That's really unfortunate, I was expecting a touchscreen S15. The focus is now on hybrids, convertibles & ultrabooks. Machines like the S15 are increasingly becoming niche products.

If sony does not come with any change in its S15, then I am with lenevo yoga 13.3. The only concern is the size of the display of yoga. I read a lot, so I dont wanna any pressure on my eyes.

OoI called and asked, the guy said that its the same exact hardware. But then again he said he had never heard of the issue before anyway. I think I might get it anyway, 899 with the student discount would buy me 1080p IPs, 8 gigs of ram and dedicated graphics.

While no one knows if the new s15's hardware is updated, I would still go with the S15 even if it had the orange-gate. I honestly can not notice it on a day-to-day basis and if you really need the accuracy for the spur of the moment, you can always hook up an external monitor, which is recommended anyways for graphics artists as no laptop screen can accurately produce all colors. IMO, the orangegate is a gross over exaggeration of the issue and can only be noticed if you are comparing with another screen (an even so, you will notice that the other screen has flaws where the S15 panel does not). I cannot recommend this laptop higher enough and to dismiss it over such a small issue is foolish.

The only upgrades in hardware are the frequency of the quad i7 CPU and the rpm of the 750Gb HDD.

No one really know what the display is like before he gets the new model. But I guess sony does not fix the orange gate because they don't have to. People will buy a product with flaw because they believe that there is no perfect product in this world.

Sony refuses to officially acknowledge the issue. It isn't exactly an issue in the first place though. They just installed a crappy screen to begin with, which runs perfectly in its crappy magnificence. It is possible that Sony might have chosen a similar screen with a higher color gamut for their Windows 8 batch. HP certainly did for their ENVY 15 series. But until I can confirm they have, I can't justify shelling out over a thousand bucks for a laptop that cant display a primary color.

I wouldn't treat IPS as a major plus in a laptop unless you often view it from very oblique angles. Some TN screens have better colour than the S15's and perfectly good viewing angles for normal laptop use. For most laptop users it's more important to have decent colour and contrast and a non-reflective surface.

IPS is only really a major plus if you sit several people around your laptop to watch movies - it prevents the colours being off for the people at the sides. But it loses some of that advantage if the colours are off anyway because the IPS panel is incapable of displaying red.

Sorry but I have to strongly disagree with you. I just returned my 2 week old Sony VAIO S15 because of the orangegate issue. To say it is " a gross over exaggeration" is completely wrong. Get any half decent screen, even an ipad, open up any paint application (MSpaint) and fill both screens with 255 red, 0 blue, 0 green now tell me it is " a gross over exaggeration" - The colour displayed I wouldn't even call red, it is a Redish Orange but more towards the Orange.

Yes it can display some darker reds but any bright reds, like for example the Google icon is way off. Once you see the difference and are aware of it, you see the problem on any image that is meant to have a rich red, it's terrible. Now if you don't give a damn that your display can't show one of the main primary colours correctly or even close to correct, that is good for you but it is not an over exaggeration.

For anyone who will use the laptop for any kind of photo work or multimedia editing, I would forget the VAIO S15. Apart from the screen it is a great laptop but unfortunately the display quality plays a fairly big part to a number of people when it comes to picking a laptop.

I ended up going with the Lenovo W530 FHD as the replacement, it's meant to have a very good display but it is a more expensive business grade unit.

If you don't care for colour accuracy I would fully recommend the Sony VAIO S15, it's a good unit but if you do any kind of image editing on your laptop run away from it as fast as you can.

At least HP have acknowledged the problem, I hope Sony will do the same and bring in a stealth hardware fix like HP did.

I showed the sales guys at my local Sony shop and they couldn't believe their eyes at how terrible the display showed reds, all 4 people looking at the display including the Sony sales reps agreed the colour was more orange than red and this is across all S15 units. They were so shocked, they called the state Sony Rep who has now sent a e-mail to Japan in hope that they will do something about it.

its seems more and more unlikely. they all say there isn't any note on hardware changes.

first batch should be coming out this week, so if anything we should be able to get a look later this week

i mean when they changed the screens in the old envy 15 and put in new ones that didnt have problems it wasn't announced that they had none a hardware change. Newer models had the same screens, just fixed. Maybe something like this will happen with the S15, but i mean the only way to find out is to wait a week and see if anyone posts about it.

I hope for the sake of new S15 owners that Sony at the very least do this, like HP did with the Envy, a stealth hardware fix for new S15 win8 laptops. They must be aware of the issue by now so if they don't do anything about it, it just goes to show how much Sony Japan gives a damn about the customer experience.

In saying all this, I have been told by Sony Australia that they are still not sure if they will be getting a replacement for the S15 in the Windows 8 line-up, can anyone confirm if Sony has a 15inch replacement coming with Windows 8?

If they do fix the orange-gate issue and you recently purchased a S15 from Sony, take it back and ask for the screen to be swapped under warranty.

I spoke to my Sony shop rep here in AUS about that option, had I elected to wait and see if Sony did a stealth fix, he said that it shouldn't be a problem seeing how severe and obvious the defect was. However I elected to not wait, got a refund and purchased a fully configured Lenovo 530. Lenovo just had a 30% discount weekend which meant over $1000 in savings so if any of you are interested in other options, look out for these specials.

You can clearly demo the problem to anyone in-store, I guess that is one of the advantages of buying it direct from Sony or a reputable store, you can return items or put in warranty claims without issues, even difficult claims such as this orange-gate problem. It's something buyers should be aware of when looking at buying expensive items online, do plenty of research first or the extra savings you make online may not be worth the headache down the road.
